Does it smoke while driving around or getting on it? Or, did it only smoke on the dyno? The reason I ask is, when I installed my H/C and brought it to FMS to get tuned by Allan, my car smoked on every pull. granted, my car has 80k miles so he basically said it was normal. Was my reaction. On the way home with my buddy following I ran it throught the gears and no smoke. It hasn't smoked since then and I really don't know what caused it. If I remember correctly, it smoked the most when he let off the throttle at the end of the pull. Anyway, good #s and good luck with the smoking issue.

Nice numbers!

If you guys do a search for my post about "SLP ZL 402 Flop" in the internal section, you will find that there is NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND!!!

As for the smoking, is the COT turn off?

My new motor had 10 miles miles on it before I put it on the dyno, and it doesn't smoke at all not even at WOT. Hasn't burnt a drop of oil in 1,000 miles

Good luck with it.

I am also concerned with the smoke. That is not a good sign. My car does not smoke. You might get a puff from too much fuel on the initial hit while I am walking away from someone, but thats about it. My car has a nitrous tune so my a/f is on the rich side. I have seen and heard about a few cars in Florida having similar issues. They all dyno'd high and they all broke down soon after.

I dynoed my engine with 40 miles on it.
Doesnt burn oil and hasnt puffed a drop of smoke.
Less than 3% leakdown in every hole.

Called SLP today. Kevin, who I believe is the Sales Manager, is looking into it. He took info on part specs and tuning to talk to their engine builders. With this being the first "real world" results, one would think they would want to set a good precedent and take care of a defective product. Stay tuned...

The smoke wasn't noticable at low speed driving. On the dyno, as soon as the pull started the smoke came heavy. It was even worse when the pull stopped. It easily filled the room.

I followed Mikey on the way home in my car. He punched it once and left me in a mushroom cloud.

Would having cats versus not having cats make it smoke more/less? Mine smokes right when you hit it on the dyno, like a puff shoots out. The exhaust is very pungent, without the cats, its easy to tell its uncatalized. Maybe the ORY has something to do with it and the tune?

Did you do a leakdown test? Are you sure it's rings? Could it be valve seals? Or to much oil flooding the top end of the motor?

Leakdown test was done, and it looked good. Could this be ring flutter?

If it had cats, I would suspect them. Some of the SCCA cars I do will smoke like this when the cats are ready to come apart. A/F on the tune was 12.7:1 and timing was 26 degrees total. No, this was oil.

Were all the cylinders leakdown tested? How did the plugs look?

is it doing it only under decell? I would suspect seals or guides.

Let me also say that oil smoke is bad. My first JPR 388 built motor smoked like a ****, also only when I got on it. The car put down 478rwhp on the dyno, but never performed at the track. Then it came apart in a big way (boom!), twice. I hope that is not the case for you, but I would be very concerned. Break-in miles do not matter for smoking, it will smoke right off the bat or it wont. Mikey built my new motor with an ARE shortblock, and it does not smoke, after almost no break-in before going on the dyno.

One suggestion is that if you are using synthetic oil, change over to dyno oil...the rings wont seat properly with synthetic. You can also try a heavier oil, that may help but probably wont solve the problem

Try the closed pcv and then move onto valve seals.
FWIW my 383 LT1 smoked a teeny bit until it had about 200 miles on it...

The engine made great power....
I might get one next yr.

It sounds like this thing could have to much piston the cyl. wall clearance. Have you tried to run this thing with out a pvc to the intake, just using a catch can?

My experience in building motors is only with small motorcycle motors.... but it's been my understanding that ANY smoke early on in an engines life is bad-bad-bad. ... If rings were going to seat properly, they would have during the first few minutes of the motors life.

What do the plugs look like?

The plugs looked perfect when the leakdown was done.
