Default Has Anyone Gained Power Switching from Duals Back to a Y-Pipe?

Just curious if anyone has ever gained power switching from true duals to a Y-Pipe setup with a cutout.

I highly doubt it. The X-pipes are much more efficent than a y-pipe and in most cases, the bullets flow just as much as no muffler.

No way. Even if someone did it would be peak power and not under the curve where it counts.

To clarify, he's saying you would loose mid-range power more than you would peak power by going back to Y. The X-duals really shine in the midrange.

It would be nice to have a dyno overlay of a car who went from one to the other to see the way the power curve is affected. I have dual cutouts and will have my car dynoed again soon. I am going to do this on motor to see how the curve looks through my borla sportsman and basically open headers. I expect to see a noticeable and then nominal drop in torque until about 4500 rpm and then a good gain in the upper rpms where it counts.

Here is a graph on my car. I went from a SLP Dual/Dual and stock TB to 3" True Duals with bullets and a Shanner TB.

I've gone back to a Y-pipe. Hope to have numbers soon. Car's been down for repairs (it's been a while).

Mind if I ask what made you change? I was considering going back due to ground clearance, but I think I am going to keep the duals after all.

Ground clearance + Loudness.
I've gone to a QTP Dual Elect. Y + SLP 2OTL Catback. Loud when I want loud, quiet when I want quiet. Flows well both opened and closed. I even think it sounds better than the 3" True Duals X dumped I used to run.

Most people i know have left duals and went back to a Y because they got sick of the noise.

FWIW, i've seen cars dyno before/after dual installs and the power didnt change at all

Dont remember, it's been a while. Duals may pick up a tad bit in the midrange on most cars, but it's not "that" great over the Y setup like some people think. The Y is pretty efficient as long as it's a 3 inch with a good collector.

Yes, a good merge is key.

Keep in mind 2 2.5" pipes have about the same area as 1 3.5" pipe. I've never seen a dyno comparison though.

3" TD's here. Can't see picking up a nickel goin from TD's to a Y. The gains w/a TD/x system vs. a good Y setup may be only marginal on a 346, but on big cube bottoms, TD's are the only way to go IMO..... not to mention the sound can't be beat.

As far as it being too loud....put real mufflers on it, or.... you could always drive a minivan....

I would do it but I'd love to see a 3IN Y to a 3in interm to a 3in race magnum and single turndown against a 2.5 X Dual to 2 Race Magnums or even a 3in version back to back.

I believe u would gain nothing over the single with Y but thats just an opinion...
