Default Dissapointed w/ the dyno run - l98

well i went to a "mustang dyno" the other day and it was pretty bad..

the motor is out of a 87 camaro built with 5000 miles on it l98
I dont know if you can call it l98 anymore but
here's the info and list of mods:
.30 bored to 355ci
10.25:1 compression
flat top keith black pistons
Scat 6" rods
Scat crank
Trick Flow 23 degree heads
Comp Cams XE284 cam and lifters
Summit 'Black' aluminum roller rockers
Miloden Diamond Stripper windage tray
2 1/2" headers
True 3" Duals no Cats w/mufflers
6 speed 4:10 gears

Anyways I got 278RWHP @5750 rpm (rev limiter set to 7) and 264RWTQ @5250 rpm - 3rd gear pull
It was running a little hot. they didnt take it to 7, but i dont think it'd make any difference it would only go down

Look at the chart its ridiculous getting 135 hp @ 4500 rpms.. i mean wow it dont seem that slow... i dont know if its a misread..but probably not
car is quite quicker than a stock m3 and feels quicker than a 6 spd ws6 (stock)..weights only 2800-2900 lbs
I dont know if its the dyno, but could be. They couldnt get it to read correct rpms really.. it idled at 500 and it showed 1200..
mustang dynos sux

The car is not tuned , taking it to a tuning guy (tunes vettes and v8s) next weekend.. and getting headers that all might add 40 rwhp, but otherwise why is it making low power?? its that normal for older small blocks?? Is it worth spending more money on it? Cuz I sure aint buying no new motor..
Is there anything else I can do? Comments and tips appreciated

ps blue is hp green is ft-lbs

1st of all i think the 2 1/2 in hedders are to big for ur setup, should drop down to sum 1 3/4 LTs
What fuel system you runnin? Ignition, plugs, etc? Check the plugs, check the injectors-make sure they big enough and are clean/plugs gapped properly
Maybe ur runnin outta fuel if its still stock system
otherwise i dunno cuz im just a novice

I know how you feel when I dynoed my car it was a let down. It is very quick on the street yet doesn't show on the dyno. I was at least 30-40 hp under what I thought for my mods. Sometimes I think we put too much stock in the dyno. it's really just a tuning tool. The real proof of what you have is what happens when you mash the gas. If you are happy with that just lie about the numbers many people do.

Does the car feel like it's falling on its face between 4000 rpm and 5000 rpm? If not then i'd say there's something up with that dyno. Get it tuned and let us know how it turns out.

Is this carbed??? Injected? Electric distributor or mechanical?
Where are you located?
What are you cam specs? If this is a stock TPI set up and you have a big cam in it, there's most of your problem.

You do not have a very large cam in there it seems. Especially if it idles at 500rpm. So I would not expect too much more out of it. Try the tune and run it again. Oh and take it to the track.

Idling is actually not really stable.. it was idling at 500 then..sometimes when i drive it'll idle at 1100 sometimes at like 300 and turn power brakes off..

You sure they made the pull in THIRD gear?? If so, that's your problem. 3rd gear will read quite a bit lower than 4th gear (which is 1:1). You want to do your dyno pull in 4th gear.

I think it will actually read higher numbers in lower gears.

It won't correct, will just read lower. Would probably be closer to 20-25 rwhp, IMO.

Your graph shows a significant dip in power between 4 and 5 thousand rpm. If you are still feeling power in that range then i would say there is something wrong with that particular dyno. If the graph were correct the car would fall on its face between those rpm's. Get the car tuned and re-dyno'd. Make sure you dynoing in a 1:1 gear, 4th if a manual, 3rd if an automatic.

I just took it for a drive. There's definetely not a "fall on its face" on any rpms between 2 and 7. I was just rolling at 20 mph in 1st gunned it and car smoked tires thru 1st and 2nd. When i shift from 1st to 2nd its actually in the 4-5rpm range and it definetely doesn't lose power there.

I just read everywhere and found out that mustang dyno has 7.5-15% lower number than the dynojet..so im not worried about that no more.. In any way dyno sheet is just a number for tuning..doesn't relaly mean how fast your car is..1/4 mile does.

I was expecting 330 rwhp which is 30 lower than what i would've gotten on dyno jet..seems about right
at least i can brag about how much i got to the motor...350? lol
