Im going to a new cam and should be close id think with the new setup. Its all in tuning. Who cares about dyno #s as Ill take E.T anyday.

my question to all you guys with a 98 making all this hp. are you doing it on a stock buttom end? stock block? i have a 98 ss and have read so much bad info about our weak oiling system. from what i see on this thread i'm thinking about going for a h/c swap on my 98 with 117,000 miles on.

From what I gather, the oiling problem isn't really a major issue unless your spinning SKY HIGH.
I think with a GOOD oil pump and civilalized RPM range (6700 or less), the oiling issue shouldn't be a big deal.
Others that know more about it - feel free to chime in and add / correct those statements.
PS: And yes I think most of the ppl with the 98s making 400rwhp are on the stock rotating assembly/block.

yes my old setup with "cam only" on my '98 SS are with a stock bottom end, stock rotating assembly. the weak link in the '98's i hear are the rod bolts, when my car was tuned at W2W they spun my car up to 6,850. i've never been concerned about the oil situation, i have either a katech or Thunder Racing oil pump, i forget which lol...that was a long long time ago...i'de have to go through all my reciepts, but my car has never had an oiling issue at all!

stock bottom hear to
but after spraying 100 wet shot for two years i ended up breaking a piston this year.
Quite impressed with these things overall though 600 at the flywheel is pretty damn good with cast pistons and all. I'm sure the spay just took its toll over the years

I built a motor for a friend of mine. It was a 98 Z28 6spd. I put the T-Rex cam in it and long tubes(pacesetters) and tsp duals, Fast intake and throttle body, stock pulley, stock 98 perimiter heads. Stock clutch and rear end gears are stock to 3.42. Tuned car myself with Hp Tuners and it put down 418.63 rwhp

Wow the guys hitting 400+rwhp without a t-rex sized cam must have factory freaks or generous dynos because with my 232/238 cam I hit 370 rwhp and thats with ls6 intake/ported tb/25% pulley/mac mids with ory. I would say the norm for a 98, cam only, is sub 400 rwhp. As slowhawk stated earlier and told me in person he hasnt had a 98 headed car hit 400 rwhp and he did my tune and install and he is one of the top tuners out there. Not saying it cant be done but numbers will be different on different dynos. I say go whatever cam you want, the worry about the heads later. If doing them all at once then get either the patriot or prc ls6 heads.

Of course these are SAE corrected dyno numbers, and I'm rowing a 6spd.
