Highest NA viper I have seen was in the 630-650 range. The problem is that you can be at that range, toss a Boost a pump on and spray a 175 shot. I've been in a 500wrhp viper and would not hesitate for a second to run him in my car on motor even though he has a a bunch more power than me.

I lot of guys keep the 3.08 rear gear since they cruise around on pilot sports and that way they can still hook up in 1st. think it's a big difference going from a 3.42 to a 4.10 in a ls1 car, going 3.08 to 373 in a viper in ridiculous.

BTW, I have NEVER seen a viper that could hook half as good as a F body on the street.

How much HP/Tq do you make on motor?

My 99 rt10 Viper dynoed 410/465 rwhp bone stock

with.....
-no cats
-roller rockers
-air intake
-tune
-light weight fly wheel

...it dynoed 450/500

With all the bolt ons and tune the 1996-2002 vipers can hit 480/530 SAE

With heads they can get to the 550 rwhp range..Of course if the engine is stroked and the hole 9 yards then 600 rwhp is possible...But typically 460-480 with all the bolt ons/tune and 520-550 with all the bolt ons/tune/heads

no one changes the cam in there vipers

As well my 2003 SRT10 with..

-KN filters
-roller rockers
Dynoed 459/492

With all the bolt ons/tune they can hit 500-515 rwhp

Then with heads 550-580 rwhp

again after numerous searching just about nobody does cam work on vipers...I dont know why???????But I was gonna do it and after lots of reading I found that no one does it.

Dont get me wrond..Theres a few cam'd Vipers out there but it is very rare. Usually full bolt ons/tune/heads..or just straight to FI...

So 600 rwhp for a gen2 or gen3 viper is kinda stretching it. Not saying it hasnt been done ( because it has)

But your typically looking at 540 rwhp for the Gen2's and 570 rwhp for the gen3's with bolt ons/tune/heads.....

Out of curiosity... Why dont they? Is it driveability or fuel economy or a little of both? I know the vipers dont do amazing with fuel economy but I guess if you can afford one gas prices are of little concern.

I have seen shops custom grind cams for vipers and get great results. Saying no one is false.

Gen 2 vipers come with a rather large cam from the factory, Once you drive one you will know. There is a little lope at idle, and when driving it around, you will notice is has some significant cam surge. Plus cam swaps are a bitch on those cars, i'm pretty sure you need to pull the motor for it.

When I asked this question i was told that in order to change the 1996-2002 Cam you had to take out the whole engine. And this is why no one does it..

As well the bone stock 708 cam in my 1999 viper idled rougher than my C5 with it's after market 224/224 cam...

I beleave the 2003-2006's are easier to change the cams in but people got so used to not doing it from 96-02 that it's rarelt discussed now..

ive always personally thought that the HUGE *** 505 cubic inch 8.3 litre v10 was just begging for a cam. But the 6000 other SRT10 owners dont seem to think so....So i left it alone.

I'm interested to see what they will be able to do with the new Viper's variable valve timing.

It is good to see that they discovered a way to apply vvt for OHV's. Hopefully GM will have a version out soon.

I go to viperalley/Viper club america daily...

Show me these "LOTS" of people doing cams...

The only cam thats ever done is the stock viper "708" cam that was in the 96-99 vipers. Some peole put these cams in there 2000-2006 Vipers But again it's a rarity...

From 1993-2006 there are roughly 20,000 Vipers in the world. A 1/4 of them have been wrecked and parted out. So more like 15000 Vipers actually driving the streets..

Out of those 15000 "MAYBE" 500 have touched the cam...Thats a big maybe as you never read about it and searching the word "cam" on viper forums gives hardly any threads...

On the other hand....When your talking about LS1's...There were 210,000 C5's produced and 400,000 Fbodies..Plus how ever many 2004 GTO's...Out of those 600,000 PLUS LS1's...It's pretty safe to assume 50,000 of them have had cam work done....

So cam work on the LS1 is a no brainer...Cam work on the Viper is totally differant...

On the other hand..Out of those 15,000 Vipers on the road today..2,000 PLUS of them have some sort of FI....

A local Viper put down 609rwhp/609rwtq NA on 91 pump gas but it's more than just a heads and cam package. Forged bottom end, bored, heads, cam, etc etc. Pretty impressive though.

I recently finished tuning a 97 GTS with a forged shortblock, ported stock heads, and a large cam. Its a slight stroker smaller than a 522. It made 630whp and 920whp/11xxtq on the bottle. Mine made 660whp on a stock 96 GTS with no cats, vec 2, and 160 shot nitrous/propane.

A no brainer eh? Granted i have yet to do a cam swap on my ls1 but i will be undertaking this in the future, but both the Viper V10 and the LS1 are both pushrod engines right? Only difference being that the ls1 has 2 less cylinders. So how would it be completely different other than having 4 more valves, rockers, springs (unless they use a dual spring then it would be 8), pushrods, lifters and having a longer camshaft? Not trying to start an arguement but saying that swapping cams on two similar engines that operate on the same valve train basis being completely different from eachother is a little wierd. But thats just me. If im wrong then please educate, im always game for learning something new.
