Just dynoed the 98 today

No track times yet. I've only had the car for about 6 months and I've done everything except the lid. I hope to pick up a good 50-60 hp hopefully with the cam and a good tune. I'm in CA so it still has to smog. The place I got the runs done at have their own smog grind thats 232/236 590/595 115 lsa and it still passes smog

that tune might be holding you back actually, I found with my stock 98 tune with similar mods, ls6 intake, longtubes and full true dual exhaust with cats and mufflers over the axle I hit 344hp and 350ft/lb and after a proper dyno tune only hit 349hp and 359ft/lb.
I don't think a single 3.5 inch would be that much more restrictive than a true dual setup. I found the stock tune was rich enough that all those mods balanced it out nicely, it was almost dialed in perfectly as far as AFR goes, hence why the small gain from the proper dyno tune.

Not bad but not great either. You should at least be in the upper 330's to low 340's with those mods. I would definately have a leak down & compression check done on the motor to make sure the bottom end is tight before doing any internal mods.
FWIW my old 98 made 317 rwhp bone stock, and 351 w/ half those bolt ons and LS1 intake

Not bad numbers. Like Damian said, seen higher, seen lower. Sounds like he had a freak of a car or a loving dyno if he was putting down the numbers he was, so you can't always compare car for car once you get into modding. Some cars just respond better than others. Get it to the track and enjoy it! And add that cam!

I'd run through the car and replace all the tune up components to bring it back up to par. Flush injectors through the rail, replace fuel filter, run a GM top end cleaner through it, etc etc..

98's are known for not making great power, I know since I've been there. I bolted on a cheap pair of stock LS6 heads and picked up power all over the RPM band. It was well worth the 400 bucks (this was a few years ago, you can get them even cheaper now).

It sounds like you keep your car up to snuff. My guess is that the tune is the culprit if you think your numbers are a little low. Once you get the cam and get it tuned, though, it won't really matter. I wouldn't spend the money on a dyno tune if you plan on doing internals soon.

Stevied916, sounds like you're good on your maint. work for the most part. I'd be willing to bet your tuning needs some tweaking. There's no way your car only makes 320's with all those bolt ons AND a tune UNLESS...there is a problem. Also, FYI 98 PCM's have less tuning parameters, and are much harder to tune especially through mail. If you want a tune to keep in your PCM, you need to put it on a dyno with a reputable tuner and tuning software on site.
Too bad you're not local to me, I'd love to help you sort out the problem cause I HATE seeing guys making way less power than they should be. Good luck on getting it figured out. I'd start with the tune and go from there.

Yeah it's just a mail order tune. I just filed my taxes today and looks like I am getting a cam. How do you think the one I said will do? (232/236 590/595 115) I will be getting that, pushrods, patriot dual golds, and JP Performance billet single row roller chain and katech rod bolts. I want to be able to rev it but am going to use the stock lifters till I replace the heads in the summer. I will probabally have the place I dynoed it at tune it for me (all they do is late gm stuff). I would like to do it myself but think that by paying someone that is knowledgable about it will be able to make more power

A cam will be a nice addition to that car. Since you are good with maintenance and the dyno looks healthy, I'm going with mail order tune being the problem here. I've seen that bolt on wise, the 01-02 will have the edge in HP and torque due to the better flowing heads, but from 98-02, once all bolt ins are in, the numbers are surprisingly similar.
I think of it this way, the 98's start with less and have more to unlock, the 01-02 start with more and have less to unlock.
Toss in a cam into the mix and the 98 heads show why they are the worst flowing though. I didn't gain much peak torque or HP when I went to the 224 cam, BUT the area under the curve is amazing.

Get your car running right before adding more stuff to it.
And to answer your question, that is an awesome cam grind. Go for it once the car is making power on par for it's mods. I would also recommend getting a compression check done on the motor before modding it internally.
