Ed, theres another thread next to this from a few days ago you have 353 hp from the mustang dyno, this one you have 347 from the mustang dyno, Im noticing a drop in power from dyno to dyno, maybe your cats are getting clogged and costing you more and more power

Re: A4 H/C Dyno Results - Absolute 5.3L Stage 2 / TR 224
I did noticed the dyno operator having problems with a few cars on the ignition pickup. I also started having problems with my laptop and EFIlive, I kept getting disconnected. And the day before I was on the Mustange Dyno for 1 1/2 hours with no issues.
I didn't really doubt all the numbers till I ran at the track that night.
I was racing a 2000 SS with MTI Stage II Heads, Cam. He had an A4 with a converter and Headers. For me to keep with him, I had to run my 100 shot.
He was running 7.7 in the 1/8 N/A I was running 8.5 N/A.

I would go to a different dyno.. Like the other guys have said that jsut doesn't make any sense. The Mustang dyno numbers are less than a dynojet. I had a Comp 218/218 .563/.563 114lsa and GTP stage II with no headers, and I dynoed 360hp and 360tq on a dynojet.. This may be a good reference for you. The numbers were from my 1999 Z28 A4, stock stall, ls1 intake.
Good Luck getting it all straightened out.

What did you dyno stock???

I can't believe that your numbers were that low on a dynojet. The fact that you dynoed higher on a Mustang Dyno is indicative of some pretty good power. Traditionally, Mustang dynos read lower than Dynojets do. Something's not right... How much faster on nuts and bolts is it from before?
BTW, I'm sure once you put headers on the car, it will really wake up.

I bet the mustang dyno had higher correction factors to simulate dynojet numbers. That seems to be common as I have seen.

Never had a compression test. I just hope it is because I am choking the engine with the stock manifolds.

Everyone here is recommending longtubes, which does make complete sense. What I want to ask is do MAC's ruin the H/C combo? I have the MAC's with ORY, should I not be considering a H/C set up, and go with a different power adder? I won't be able to get a good H/C set up going AND spend more money on longtubes. I just don't got the $.
Headers are a must, no doubt about that.

Yes I know headers will give a good gain. But you have to remember, my first objective was keeping the car smog legal.
But I also can't see spending as much $$$ as I have a only gaining 36 rwhp.

I think BBK has new shorty header with 1 -3/4 primaries. Might be worth checking on. The picture is SBC headers but TBryne lists the following.
1 ¾ CNC-SERIES PERFORMANCE LS-1 GM HEADER SYSTEMS
With BBK’s famous CNC-Series performance and quality - our LS-1 headers give GM LS-1 owners an affordable way of adding 12-20 horsepower to their favorite bowtie.
• Beautiful chrome and polished ceramic finishes
• Includes new bolts and gaskets for a simple bolt-on
Part Number Item Price
1998-02 Camaro / Firebird
4002 1998-99 1 3/4" Chrome Headers $469.99
40020 1998-99 1 3/4" Polished Ceramic Headers $599.99
4003 2001-02 1 3/4" Chrome Headers $469.99
40030 2001-02 1 3/4" Polished ceramic Headers $599.99
Also might be worth swapping out the stock exhaust and back for LT's every two years.

blackbird, that is a great recomendation, shorties and a cam with extra ex duration to make up for the loss of ex flow by not having lt's. Makes perect sense, Im starting to become better at selecting cams to set ups from listning to alot of smart people like blackbird

Re: A4 H/C Dyno Results - Absolute 5.3L Stage 2 / TR 224
Just got back from the Dyno. Looks like the LS6 Intake gave me 8 extra RWHP. It's running a bit rich now. 11.8 - 12.0 so leaning out should get me 1 or two (I hope).
I really doubt LT's are going to give me an extra 60 rwhp. And get me even close to the 400 mark

Hi Ed, that's real low for a TR224, even with stock 99 manifolds, which are very poor and look like leggo logs.
After your most recent dyno (do you have it scanned yet?), you say you're running rich. Thus I'm assuming it is not tuned yet. From all of these posts, it looks like others have recommended this as well...Ed, you really need to get a prof tune. It's not just about A/F ratio, there's much more involved especially with a H/C combo.
Take it to Mike @ MMS he has the most ls1 tuning exp here on the west coast. It'll run you about $650, but it's worth it...I would get everything else first then tune it once right.
As far as exhaust, I see nothing wrong with your original goal of being smog legal, but that's up to you of course. There are many who put out good numbers with shorties and are happy with the ground clearance, low total sound, and smog legal status. Changing headers out every 2 years is a pia imo, unless you have a hookup or something. Regardless, you're not going to gain more than 15-20 rwhp with LTs, and probably less compared to a good set of shorties.
I've researched a lot of H/C combos with exhaust, and the numbers are all over the place. However, the few common factors of good emissions cam and heads numbers are good heads (Absolute are good--did you get them flow tested?), good tuning, ls6 intake, ported TB, and matched exhaust. I have responses from 2 people who have gotten ~380 rwhp with shorties and small cams...so it's possible if your combo is matched.
Anyway, if I were you, I would do this for the best emission legal numbers:
- shorty headers, port matched and extrude honed (expect 10+ more hp at least)
- true dual 2.5" exhaust with x-pipe over the axle with straight through pitbull or ultra flow mufflers (expect 5-10+ hp)
- ported TB (important...your CFM flow is being restricted right now...and I'm sure costing you 5-10 hp)
- Z06 85mm MAF (optional..I would for peace of mind if anything...only go for OEM)
- THEN, and only then, tuned by MMS, which will be done right the first time.
--> With the above combo if you are not close to or over 390 rwhp I would be surprised. ConstrictorTA is making ~411, although he has long tubes and more.
Sorry about the long post, hope these opinions and ideas help you decide, good luck and keep us posted.
