Depends on the torque converter. On a stock cam with a stock engine, it might be 10 rwhp difference. But if you're running a Vig 3600 and a heads/cam engine, it might be 40 rwhp difference. Some converters are more efficient than others.

unlocked 8" converters are not good for dyno numbers. Trust me.

I have an SS3600 and when I was putting down 404hp unlocked, it only made 409 locked. Yank SS converters are very efficient.

ok that makes a little bit more sense. 5whp is nothing to really complain about but 40-50 is like wtf.

i would like to know about this as well. from how i understand it, yank PT converters are the way to go if you will be NA and do not want to lock your converter. i have been told by several people that the yank ss and the vig converters will not be as efficient as the PT series.

the thruster yanks are very efficient, mine claims something like 98%... I would also like to add, is there not a risk running locked in 3rd gear at WOT? as far as the lockup clutches etc... i run a yank TT 3000, which is a torque thruster, high STR ultra efficient... according to yank that is

Why worry about it... autos aren't gonna be dyno queens so just use the dyno for tuning and the track to verify results. Locked numbers are worthless because it isn't gonna be locked when you are racing. Take it to the track and post up!

If you are loosing 43 hp on that ss4000 Id say that is a broken converter. I actually just installed the ss4000 in my car and if i see over a 25 hp drop ill toss it threw yanks window after writing f-u DAVe on it. My PT4000 only difference is 18-20 hp locked to unlocked. I cant see the ss4000 being that bad.

you are 100% correct, although i used to lock up the converter in third gear and i actually picked up 3-4 mph.

Although it showed a loss on the dyno there is nothing like track times.
It murders on the street and trapped about 1mph faster and ets went down too. It is a way different converter than my old 3500.

The looser the converter, the more hp it soaks up on the dyno.
I've seen 4000 rpm converters soak up almost 40 hp unlocked vs locked. They're not broken, just acting like a big sponge.
