85 mm lid/maf gains
well i forgot to get the graph with stock type mafr/lid but i finally got to hit the dyno and see if the 85 combo would gain me anything. i did 2 pulls with the stock size mti lid and stock type maf without screens and nx ends. made 505 and next pull was 510. on a side note i sprayed it with the 150 pills and hit 698 rwhp. put on the slp 85 maf and ftra 85 mm lid and retuned alittle since it ran alittle richer and it did 523/472. opened the cutout and hit 538 rw with 486 tq . now if it would only run like a 500 rw car haha.

What I've seen too. Stock 75mm MAF and small lid is pretty dumb with a 90mm FAST. Nice gains.

I tell people to leave the stock one on until they are going to get tuned or will be going shortly since the fueling will vary so much between units.
FWIW, I had a car that had a GM 85mm MAF and made 445rwhp through a 9" on a DJ224 that reported a peak freq at WOT (11,875 hz) that put us in the next-to-last cell in the MAF table. On a cooler day, this car will max that 85mm MAF out. Personally, once a car is in the HP area of the original poster's, unless the customer demands otherwise, I'd go with a 1-bar SD setup.
-edit-
Nice sig BTW

That's a response from an inexperienced tuner. Any tuner worth his salt will tune in Speed Density first, then rescale the MAF to give you the ideal fueling at all load cells.

About the frequency running out - aren't there some of them that will put you lower in the frequency range than others? I know the SLP's and other aftermarkets with the resistors in them run way high in the range, but I thought some of the factory units run lower for a given airflow... could be wrong though...

I would peg a factory 2002 screenless Z06 MAF at about 550 rwhp on my Trans Am when running dry nitrous. By swapping to an F-body calibrated SLP 85mm MAF, the change in MAF scale gave me extra headroom to run just over 600 rwhp before pegging the scale.

This is definitely good info. I don't really know much about tuning, but my tuner has told me not to get an aftermarket MAF...might be time to have another chat with them and maybe shop around.
On a side note, does descreening a stock MAF gain anything? Does it gain with tuning? The vehicle in question is in the 400 rwhp range.

Any power or ET pick up by going to a SD tune Vs. a 85mm MAF tune? We were told on some setups yes but most do it for driveability?

Did you run with the cutouts open or closed when you made your initial pulls with the stock sized MAF and lid? I am going to be doing the exact same thing on my 413cid LS2 on Thurs. Hopefully I will see some gains similar to yours.

with the cutout open before the 85 swap it was i think 522 or 523 rw so i actually picked up around 15 rw with the swap. i was really happy with the results.this setup puts out more power than i ever thought it would with ported 243's and a little scrub 244/248 cam through 1 3/4 headers.
