Default What could my GTO run?

This is the first time that I've put headers on any of my vehicles, so I'm a bit excited. Heh.

2005 GTO automatic with OBX Shorty headers, JBA catted Mid Pipe, Vararam CAI, and muffler delete. I'm waiting to get it tuned which will probably happen in the next couple of weeks. What could my car run in the quarter? I'm near the coast around sea level.

No estimates? I thought that this would be easy. Haha. I was thinking maybe high 12s.

any reason you didn't get longtubes?

you're leave a lot on the table with shorties...the majority of the forum here regards them as no better than stock and based on results I've seen from 5.3 ls trucks I would agree...make more noise but little to no power

The car has 19" wheels, and the tires are Dunlop DZ101 or something like that.

Yeah, I didn't want to spend the money. I got a great deal on Ebay for the shorties and midpipe. I've been told that the real restriction on the GTO is in the midpipe. I'd bet that the numbers are much better for those with a midpipe than without.

Hm. That's odd. I have marginal weight reduction too with the headers and muffler delete. It's probably not too much heavier than my old '98 Trans Am.

After my tune, I'll probably go to the track and see what I can.

GTOs are heavy... ~3700 lbs. Thats part of the reason I got rid of mine. They also have a tendency to retain under-hood heat(my wife's Grand Am was faster in the summertime). Pop the hood on a fully warmed up GTO and another car at the same time and I guarantee the GTO will be the one to melt your face. And their narrow rear wheel wells limit tire width. Those are some of the reasons why they don't run great times without attention to said details unless you have a power adder. And your 98 is at least 200 lbs lighter.

That being said, I love GTOs and miss mine dearly.

If you run it in cool temps and drive it right you should break in to the high 12s.

Don't forget the lack of mufflers and little bit of weight reduction from the headers and such. It's probably only a 150-pound difference. The previous owner shaved a bit of the wheel well and put 275/30s on the rear. When I get new tires, I hope I have room for 275/40s.

Why would you want a taller tire? And gto's seem to do shitty at the track for its mods, but pull on cars on the street, that according to its track times, shouldn't.

That doesn't answer my question. Offhand, it seems that I'd want my COG as low as possible. Even still, I don't see a 35 vs. 40 would make that much of a difference. Maybe I'd have a smoother ride with the 40. I think that my width is probably fine for the mods that I have.

I said that because if you take the gt500 for an example its tires are too skinny and they dont hook up well. If you take the vette tires for example they are very wide and they hook up well my car is built not to the max but pretty built and im still running on the stock size tires when it rains i hardly hook up from a dead stop Vette tires are wider and vettes hook up better in the rain than I do. Point is you need a wider tire if you are really worried about it. getting a wider tire may also cause you to change out the wheels as well so keep that in mind.
