Default Moving to Williamsburg/Hampton area

Hey guys, my job is reloacting me to the Williamsburg.Richmond/Norfolk area and was wondering if some of you can help me out. I have never been there in my life and while trying to sell my place back home, need to find an apartment to rent out there.

I would like to stay in the north Hampton - Williams burg area. What are the nicer locations out that way? Do you recomend any apartment complexs. looking for a 1 bedroom that allows dogs up to 50 lbs.

Where are some local area to hang out? clubs, sporting events, stuff to do. Any good beaches around that area?

One other question, kind not related, why do most of the houses out there have only a 1 car or no garage? Does the weather stay nice throughout the year to not justify needing one? I'm moving from Chicago, the winters get bad up here.

thanks.

Where is your job going to be? Williamsburg/Richmond/Norfolk are all pretty far from each other.

I lived in Newport News close to Wburg and I liked it. Wburg is a nice area, and houses are nicer than the other areas. Yorktown is nice too, so check out there as well.

I basically work out of my house. I am a Field Service Engineer for Ford. I will be going to all the dealers in that area plus a few from N.C. I'm trying to centrally locate myself between all my dealers for easy access and limited over-night hotel stays.

well then if you are going to be going to nc sometimes , newport news would be the spot or maybe hampton . now if you want to be located to the nite spots , norfolk or va beach would be good . and williamsburg is only about 35 mins away from norfolk . i lived there 4 10 years .and as for the garage thing , it is due to a lack of space . there are around a million or so people in the 7 cities ( norfolk , va beach , newport news , hampton , smithfield , portsmouth , chesapeake ) . you can be in one city on a road and then in another and then back in the first one . it is kinda confusing but you get used to it . the traffic is hell . be prepared . and besides , didnt ford close its plant in norfolk ?

Smithfield/Suffolk are really nice rural areas without alot of people. Hampton and Norfolk can get pretty ghetto, and so can alot of NN. Williamsburg is really nice and close to Busch Gardens and stuff. Most of the night clubs and stuff would be located down in VB and Norfolk like Steve said.

I would look into places in Suffolk/Smithfield/Wburg or Yorktown with houses being a little cheaper in Suffolk and Smithfield at the moment compared to Wburg and Yorktown since its not very populated out there. But you will be centrally located in either spot.

And if you move to Suffolk/Smithfield you can hit the backroads on your way to work

I live in Smithfield and I can say that it has nothing for what you are looking for. It does make a big difference in where you stay as to how you get from place to place around here.

Are you going to get a chance to come down here and look at some places before you move? If so, I would be more than willing to tell you a few places to go and look and show you on a map how to get around. PM me if interested.

I live in Newport News and like that it is central to richmond and NC. There are alot of houses for rent right now in this area. Cool thing is you are never too far from the interstate.

Thank you guys very much for you input. I just flew back into Chicago last night from the williamsburg/norfolk area. The best area that I found so far is Newport news, Jefferson and I-64 I believe (Impression/stoney run/port warwick apartments). They have all the major stores around the area and it looks safe. The rent out there is pretty expensive, but I found that to be the case in WIlliamsburg (Newtown area) as well. It seems I will be spending almost $1K per month for a 1 bedroom (My morgage right now is $1300/month for a 3bedroom house). I know there are slightly cheaper apartment complexes, but those seem to be a little more run-down.

I'm going back on Tuesday for next week, anyone else have any more suggestions on location? How about nice areas in Hampton? Maybe even south of that river extending in from the ocean?

One more question, are these rivers salt or fresh water? I don't recall if the water flows in or out of the ocean.

Check out Rent.com, virginiapilot.com, gohamtonroads.com. You can get into a house for $1000-$1500 a month just a mile or two down from port warwick. I live just around the corner from there. BTW salt water.
