On Friday, 1,000 to 1,200 General Motors dealers are expected to receive notices that they are being cut. Their franchises will expire in October 2010, a G.M. spokeswoman, Susan Garontakos, said.

Unfortunately it needed to be done.

Over saturation of the market is not a good things and ultimately cannabalizes itself. Not only "American" car brands are competing against "Import" for a given class/level of car but then it breaks down to "American" Vs "American", and then further down to "Chevrolet A" vs "Chevrolet B" and then breaks down consumer confidence.

Both companies are aiming for about 3600-3800 Dealerships which will spread things out but again make it where there are only so many outlet for a given car and get away from having more cars then there are Licensed drivers.

Yeah, when you can go to 6-8 different GM/Chevy dealerships within a 10-15 miles radius, it isn't good for business.

That might also help the dealers make some $ when they sell a car. Yeah, I'm guilty of wanting to buy a new vehicle for $100. over invoice. Just like everyone else. The dealer do it (or used to). That probably didn't help the situation in the end. Now, instead of visiting 5 dealers in 2 hours to see if they will do it. It might take a few days so people will just pay what it costs if they want to purchase the vehicle.

We are losing 3 Chrysler dealers in my county alone. I'm thinking that the closest GM dealer to me will be OK although they do have the Pontiac brand. They also sell Buick and GMC

Glad you guys made it.

Unfortunately, who ever won the Election, this was going to happen, if at worst maybe complete closure. But by trimming up the fat, I think dealerships will be competitive and profitable.

Cheers!

In the news today;

GM says it is notifying 1,100 dealers that it will end their contracts with the automaker.

"GM has yet to identify which dealers were notified Friday. But its previously announced plans signal that most of the cuts will be in major metropolitan and suburban areas, where GM acknowledges that "dealership overcapacity is most prevalent."

thank you very much... We will prevail. I was just talking to a couple of people on another forum that agree with us completly... The ratio of chry, ford, and chevy dealers to nissan, toy, and honda is staggering... And we wonder why they are not in the same trouble as us...

They (japs & germans) know how to properly *lease* vehicles and give the folks more for thier money.

Free service for the lease, good lease factors, excellent product- America better learn from this.

Pretty bad, gonna be alot of lost jobs and it will be harder and take longer to get warranty work done, basic service etc.
All those 7 year 70,000 mile warranties keep those sites pretty busy, gonna be tough for the dealers that are left to dervice all the cars in a timely manner.

Becuase companies like Toyota make money selling cars as opposed to other companies like Gm and Dodge selling for very little profit.

I could be wrong here and I hate to say it but I think they have to make money on sales compared to the american auto's because they aren't going to be making the kind of money the american auto's will on service and repair.
