Default R U racing w/o a Driveshaft Loop?

For what it's worth, that flimsy little piece of tin put in as a support about mid-point down your driveshaft on the '98-02 Camaro's & Firebirds DOES NOT substitute as a driveshaft loop....A broken shaft, or u-joint, especially at speed, will rip that piece of tin right off the floorboard--bolts and all, letting the driveshaft hit the asphalt, possibly catapulting your car into a flip, or driving the shaft thru the floorboard and removing YOUR bottom end. Do yourself a favor and install an approved driveshaft loop for the '05 season--even if you're only running 13's. It's one of the best mods you can install.... WJ

It's supposed to be a "approved" driveshaft loop, but any one of them is better than none at all. The only time they will look to see if it's approved, is if you run at a Regional or National event. (Tech, that is.)WJ

I'm not sure...Certain model & mfg. loops are approved by NHRA & AHRA. There are specs for the loops in each rulebook, along w/pics for self-fabricated loops. Like I said in previous post, Any is good to go for the weekend warrior-----they check 'em close at the regional & National level, however. WJ

You can pat yourself on the back for having the sense just to install one. Probably close to 1/2 of the people racing their F-bods don't have a loop installed. They are inexpensive and easy to install. A broken driveshaft on the starting line is USUALLY not a big deal, but at half-track or farther down, when you've got some speed up---and you lose a u-joint or break a shaft---that's when the trouble starts without a DS loop.... So I have 3 questions.

Mind you I'm still fairly "new" to RWD racing ( was FWD turbo racer) so don't kill me too much when you read below.

1: Do you install one or 2 loops? I ask because...
2: Do these driveshafts break at the front or rear is it a crap shoot?
3: How does one know if the loop is "approved"?

Wink

Oh stop it, the shafts ONLY break at the line while the car isn't moving so you don't really need one!
JUST KIDDING!

What the big deal with this driveshaft loop deal

I've made a few in the past for certain cars that needed them custom.

My loop was "used" a few weeks ago at Atco. My driveshaft twisted and broke in 1/2 at the line. Cracked the trans case also. DS loop contained it well. Julio from Cartek said it was a good thing I had it.

Lot's of people drag racing don't have driveshaft loops, Don. That's the only point I was trying to make. As far as "approved" loops go, it tells all about them in both NHRA, IHRA rulebooks. Tom at T. Byrne Motorsports can also tell you about "approved" loops-- He sells both. And yes, some use 2 loops, and some are incorporated into certain torque arms. What I also was doing, was comparing the importance of a driveshaft loop, vs. the importance of a T-top car running 12's and 13's having to have a roll cage. Just think the loop is more important in that case....NED tech has NEVER checked my car for a driveshaft loop during tech, BTW. So much for loops and cages, done. Best wishes. WJ

I think anyone racing, especially on these aluminum cans they call LS1 driveshafts, should have a loop in the car. I did it when I was in 13 second land on street tires. Can't have too much piece of mind when it comes to safety, and it costs about 50 bucks and 20 minutes of your time for one.

I need to decide what type to get. Cheap BMR or the Sphoon w/torque arm.
