ok i am curious to hear this story
In May 2002 I brought my Z down to get it tuned after having a FAST system installed.
Mike Faucher (to be know from here foreard as "Peckerhead") starts to tune it and calls to tell me that it has a rotor phasing issue and Peckerhead gives me three options.
1 - modify a Caddy Northstar ignition
2 - modify the Opti
3 - Ditch the opti and put in a crank trigger and cam sensor and run coil packs
Well after seeing Dean's motor on his engine dyno looking mighty horny and wanting to do something different I told him to do the coil packs.....
So Peckerhead starts taking the front of the motor apart to get at the cam gear as he's going to drill a hole in it and put a magnet in it for a pickup for the cam sensor and put in a crank trigger on the blower bracket.
Charlene (to be know as Dragon Lady from here on out) says I owe money, so I give them some $7-800 ish. So he starts to work on it and then takes a break to go off and play "Pro Mod racer who can't qualify and the only time he does he gets blown away in the first round"
Finally get's it back together and it won't run.......
Dicks around with it for a bit but now it's the summer and Peckerhead and the Dragon Lady (and I use the Lady term loosely) decide "it's too hot" and close up shop and go to the lake
Works on it some more and now it runs but only on 5 cylinders.
Dragon *****....Oooops I mean Lady calls me up after 9 pm and hounds me for money....WTF???? Is this the way to do business
Still doesn't run right and now were going on 5 months and I'm still at 5 cylinders.
He tells me that it's a problem with the wiring of the FAST system, tells the person who wired in the FAST system that I have a motor problem.
Now we're at the end of September and it's been over a year since I blew up the motor and I want to race it but Peckerhead is getting nowhere so I yanked it out of there and towed it to SRA Transmission and it took Buddy Souza about two weeks before he could look at it as I brought it unanounced and it took him another 3 weeks to reverse engineer his setup.
Dragonlady calls me up with a final bill (suck my dick
) and tells me that it's a motor issue and before I have Buddy go on a wild gooschase I should have him check the motor, well Buddy checked out the motor and it's fine (hence the 5,000 miles I've put on it).The magnet is in the wrong spot so it's sending a signal to the E-dist but then the signal overlaps and the E-dist get's confused so it has to get another crank trigger signal and two cam pulses before it figures out where it is and then it drops the 1,8 and 2 cylinders again and on and on it goes.
So Buddy figures it out and get's it running but tells me he doesn't like it and the system has inherant flaws and we should consider doing something else.
I got the car back from Buddy but it's now the first week of November and the track is closed so I just stuck the car in the garage and talked to SRA over the winter and Buddy said he wanted to car back to create a prototype ignition system OSCAR (Optical Spark Conversion Assembly Replacement).
Time for another Bud Light
I brought the car back to SRA in February and got it back late May / early June. He did alot of other work for me as well, installed a twin intank fuel pump assembly and some other stuff, let me come down there and install the 12 bolt and cage and I drove the car home
Which is something I can't say I did when leaving Quest RacingI paid Quest ~$2K and SRA another $1800 to figure out his mess only to throw most of it in the trash and start over with OSCAR, as my Z was used for the prototype SRA took care of me and like I said I drive me Z home from SRA!!
The 2003 season was wasted chasing other gremlins and trying to catch up financially as by this time I had a fortune into the car (built the 383, upgraded to a D-1, FAST etc...). I'd fix on problem and then find another, I got so disgusted with it that I bought a 98 Z/28 LS-1
and let the 94 sit and then finally in Feb 2004 I brought my Z down to SD Concepts in Rhode Island (funny it's the only state that manages to fix my Z) and they fixed my problem of munching blower belts.I did manage to have a fairly good 2004 year and got the car to run 10 flat.
I did pop a head gaskets as I got greedy but funny how my alleged motor problems as diagnosed by Peckerhead never materialized.
Originally there were four of us who Peckerhead convinced us that getting rid of the opti and going coil packs was the way to go......
I am the only one still running coil packs and it is thanks to SRA Transmission
They are the only company I trust to work on my Z other than my drunken self (and SC Concepts for blower pulley problems). Two others are running distributors and the other has parted out is F-body and this is after 2 of the three had numerous motors grenaded at the hands of peckerhead (some on the engine dyno some in the car but hey it's never Peckerheads fault
).Quest is the worst hack shop I've ever seen and I will bad mouth those *****'s till I get $2000 worth of satisfaction and steer as many people as I can away from them.
They're good enough to lull you in and then you're screwed. I've met other people who've brought their car there and then all were charged way more than they were quoted and quite a few have had to do what I did and have their cars repaired properly at SRA Transmission.
There is a monthly meeting of the "I got screwed by Quest Racing club" and although I am not the president I am a member
Thank you sir may I have another
