Default Any ATV riders in here?

My daughter has a 50cc 4 wheeler that she rides. I sometimes jump on that or an 80 if I want to ride along with her. Now I think I want to get something for myself. I've heard that the laws aren't to ATV friendly. Dirt bikes can ride the lines and trails but alot of places don't want to see ATVs. Any idea why and recommendations on where to ride in SE Mass?

Thanks!

Ok, found the info I needed - http://mass.gov/dfwele/dle/atvsafety.htm

Reason why I heard about people getting chased/stopped by the DEM was because the bikes weren't registered. Freetown Forest is a good place to ride. Just need to get a permit for the day.

Tom we usually ride the railroad tracks to alittle past the fall River Country Club then ride all the way to the forrest, we normally dont bother registering the quads or getting permits cause were just rebels like that LOL...but with your daughter I can understand following all the right rules...we have all kinds of riding spots around SE Mass, lately my friends have been going to Wrentham, i guess theres a trouble free area over there they ride at...they ride every weekend so if your looking to get with some guys from the area let me know....plus my buddy just bought 40 acres of land in Dighton so we'll be over there soon....

By the way if your gonna buy don't buy anything but the yamaha 450

I've got the Honda 450R. Has been my favorite bike so far, and I've owned and ridden them all.

Lots of my buddies have started to pick them up. 7 of us rode from Windham, NH last weekend, through Derry, and into Freemont and back.

Had a good time, and the trail is legal for quads to ride. In the spring/summertime, you can go all the way up to Epping, NH. They only allow the quads to go from Windham-Freemont in the winter time. They reserve the rest of the trail for sleds I guess?

A couple of my buddies have the Yamaha 450, with mods. The 450R v. Yfz450 always turns into a debate. FWIW, I've beaten all the stock, mildy modded 450s I've raced. All I have is a 13t front sprocket.

Both bikes handle comparably, the Honda is hands down more comfortable. For a nice sporty trail machine, you can't beat a 400EX, or Z400. The new 400 Hondas with reverse are really nice. If you want to step it up to a quicker bike, you have to check out the 450s. Suzuki, Yami, and Honda all make some bad *** bikes.

its tough to compare because alot has to do with rider, all we do is pretty much drag race quads, and from what we've seen the Yami 450 modded is the bike to beat for new bikes out right now, we dont do stock bikes LOL....but the king of all bikes is my cousins Cannondale, that bike just flat out kills anything

I live right off that trail, near the convienence store in the center of Sandown. Let me know the next time you go riding there, I can show you some good trails that take you to the Shell Station on Rt125 in Kingston.
Plus I just bought a KDX220 and I'm looking for more excuses to take it out.

I have a Polaris Sportsman 800 ATV. It is a beast, 800 EFI with dual exhaust and 4 wheel drive. It pulls the front tires off the ground and it is over 800 pounds.

I ride the power lines and gas lines with it. I have mine registered and the cops leave me alone. If you don't register be prepared to run as they will tow it if they catch you.

Oh niiiice. We stopped at that store. After I bought a redbull, we headed out again. At that point, I apparently forgot to rezip the pocket I had my wallet and cell phone in.

Long story short, the cell phone is currently somwhere between Sandown, and Freemont. I'm pissed!

Shoot me a PM with your cell number. We won't be out this weekend, my buddies got his bike in the world trade center show in Boston.

Weekend after next, we should be out in full force. There should be at least 8 of us, probably more.

On a side note, how far can you go past that big parking lot in Freemont? My buddy said the rest of the tral was for snowmobiles in the winter?

I don't have a snowmobile so I don't know how much further it goes. But your buddy is right, its only for snowmobiles. The tension wires I ride on are much more exciting than the rec trail anyway... and theres no cops doing speed traps on the tension line trials.

I'll PM you my cell phone number.

For flat out drags there is not much faster than a banshee with cubs and 400+cc's. For that matter there is jsut about no quad faster than that! can you say over 100rwhp????

I went to look at a few after work last night. My first stop was the Yamaha dealer on route 28 in Brockton. I started out wanting a Raptor 350 when I got the idea to buy an ATV but then started working up in side. So, when I got there I went straight for the 700. Checked that out and talked the guy there for awhile. He also showed me some other ATVs too. One thing that he kept mentioning in the conversation was that I would really have to be careful on a 700 because it would be easy to get hurt if I wasn't. This started to sink in a little as I continued to look around the store. I asked if he had any Raptor 350s so he showed me a left over 2005 that was in the back. I pretty much decided on that one after I sat on it. It was a comfortable machine and I figured it would work for the things that I'd be doing. Plus it probably wouldn't have been a good idea to get a monster machine for my first ATV. The guy mentioned that they might be flexible with the price so I asked what he could do for it. He said we'd have to fill out all of the paperwork and he would present it to the manager because he couldn't make that decision. My reply was "just like a car dealer...". He ended up saying "something like that". This really turned me off. I looked around some more and left. I didn't have the time to do the back and forth haggling thing.

My next stop was Bettencout Honda down the street. They had alot of ATVs outside. I saw one I liked. It was the TRX400EX. I didn't care to much for it in the pictures online but it looks really good in person. I sat on it, liked it, went inside, talked to the guy, he took about $350. off and I told him to write me up! Done deal!

I had some track time booked at F1 Boston so I had to get out of there pretty quick. They prepped it to be ready when I got there tonight. The weather is supposed to be good on Saturday so it looks like my daughter and I will be doing some riding.

My brother-in-law and his kids go dirt bike riding every weekend. He told me about the "people in the green trucks" (DEM). I guess they have something against people on dirt bikes and ATVs. He ended up getting chased for a few hundred feet a few weeks ago. The chase ended when another DEM truck pulled in front of him. The bikes were towed (about $250. for that) and there was some other fine. The link I posted a few days ago is pretty much good for dirt bikes but I've been told that ATVs are left out in the cold. No wonder riders have to be rebels!

Well if you are looking for a legal place to ride, head up this way. Its about 1 hr from boston. But you have to get them registered in NH! They do check, not from there green trucks but from their 4 wheelers.

Nice choice Tom. The 400EX is a tried and true bike, and in 05/06 they have stepped up and added some nice touches.

The bike is light, has plenty of power to have fun on the trails; and with reverse it makes trail riding even better. Not to mention it has one of the best balance points of any quad on the market. I can hang wheelies on that thing in my sleep!

You'll have lots of fun on that thing. These quads can take a serious beating too, it's almost unbelievable.
