Default Help!!!! Inspection questions!!

I live in York PA. I took my 1998 Trans Am for inspection today. They told me that I needed the pinion seal replaced because it was leaking onto the exhaust and that this had to be done to pass inspection. I have been told by a friend that this is incorrect. Would this have to be done to pass inspection? Please help because if not Im calling them and fighting for my cash back! Thanks a lot

it depends where you live, i'd call up another shop and ask them what the rules are. i got my car inspected in east stroudsburg pa and at first they told me I failed bcause my rear was apparently leaking oil...then after me bitching at them, they went back on that and let me pass.

go to the padot inspection website and read the law..they are full of ****. Spray it with brake cleaner before you take it in if you have any questions..just has to be clean for the inspection.

That isn't a safety violation or an emissions violation so you should pass.

in RI they are not supose to pass anyone that is leaking any fluid, it is part of the safty regs not emissions. But I have had cars with rear mains leaking and they never failed me for a leak sounds like the guy has a hard-on for your car or something.

that is BS. I have never heard of anyone failing because of a leak.... hell I've seen cars pulling in for CT emmissions back when we had testing stations rather then garages doing it and they were leaving trails of fluid on the ground and noone cared, as long as the probe in the tailpipe didn't see anything bad going on they were fine.

I'd fight that all day long. Apraying it down with some brake clean wouldn't hurt, but there's no way you should be failing for that. More oil gets spilled on the ground at a gas station everyday from people checking dipsticks then your rear will pour on the ground in 2 years no matter how bad it's leaking.
