Default Favorite virus/spyware solution?

I've been trying to gauge opinions on what's the best out there so I can set up my new laptop. I think I want to the try that AVG anti-virus, and I'll definately run Mozilla as a browser. The people I asked so far suggest several other spyware programs, but they run IE and I think Mozilla covers me in that dept. If I run Mozilla and AVG, and a firewall I should be good to go right? Any firewall suggestions?

Favorite virus/spyware solution?
Yeah...stop looking at so much ****.

I use Spybot, it's free and better than Norton, which I also have (and won't be renewing). I have no experience with Mozilla, but running a scan every now and then with a spyware detector couldn't hurt.

Great, I had definately planned to run that combo. But that's it? Mozilla covers you for spyware, pop-ups etc well enough that there's no need for a specific spyware app (like the SpyBot recommended above) or AdAware or anything?

at giant....I'm sure that's part of the problem...but you'd be amazed how many places try to hit you with spyware. I get the **** from my credit card companies websites even.

We have both...NORTON is GREAT IMO...had it for 3 years..haven't had any problems........Norton works at all times as SPYBOT you have to run it manually all the time.

That last statement is certainly true, but honestly, do you really feel those last 4 are necessary? What are they doing that Firefox and AVG leave you potentially vulnerable too?

I'm really curious about your setup, everyone with AVG seems to run IE and use anti-spyware that caters to that. I definately want Mozilla as a browser, but in the past I've used machines with Norton. I actually felt like sometimes excessive security was bogging the system down. I hear AVG is much more streamlined, so beyond that I want to use as few system resources as possible but have all my bases cover. Thanks for the input....

I grew to dislike Norton over the years. Too much of a system hog. AVG works just fine. You can opt for the free version. Spyware blaster does not run in the background. It makes changes to your system to stop spyware from running. Spyware guard barely takes any system resources to run. It monitors your internet traffic. I run Spybot one a week as a checkup (don't enable the "teatimer" resident protection for this program). Hijack This doesn't fix anything. It just tells you every process that is running. The log file can be analyzed for anything suspicious.

Don't forget a firewall. Zone Alarm Free works fine.

Just go to the M/S website and get Windows Defender, it's FREE. I use it.

I use AVG for my Home PCs. Windows Defender is actually pretty good too.

If you want to pay for a spyware solution, check out Webroot Spy Sweeper. I use it on the PCs I support at work.

I did a search on this on top virus programs. I ended up going with Panda Platinum (rated like 3rd). It's like 50 bucks I think retail, but I found an OEM copy for less then 10 bucks. If you search, you can get software for really cheap and its legal too.

Panda works automatically and gets rid of new spyware like every day.

I personally wouldn't use Norton

Norton AV and firewall here and never get viruses. Of course I'm a computer science/security engineer and live and breathe these things so I don't go clicking everything a basic internet user would. Just use common sense, mouse over suspect links to see where they're really going, don't click on too good to be true things, and NO that is not a long lost high school friend trying to contact you through Hotmail.

I've tried a bunch of free programs and like AVG the best. However, a firewall is also a great help in keeping viruses away. I tend to go with ZoneAlarm most of the time, but Kerio personal firewall is also decent as well. Just try a few out.
