I don't know the amount of work involved but you would probably be better off swapping to a 4l80. That way you would still have an overdrive for highway use.

Well You Can Get A 400 Then Buy Gear Vendors Overdrive Or Triple Over Drive To Make It A 6speed And It Comes With A Controller That You Can Shift It Manualy Or Auto And It Cost Like 2400 Bucks For That Set Up So Its Like Having A T56 But With No Clutch And Vertical Shifting

4L80E. You'll spend the rest of your life trying to make a T56 launch like a auto, and never succeed.... WJ

I was just in the same boat...had a 6 speed in there for a long time, put a 408 in...big shot of nitrous is going on. SPEC 3 clutch went, put a Textralia Exo-Skel in there and decided to swap for a TH400. Walked into a deal that I couldn't pass up. Consistancy and safety concerns is why I decided to switch over. I was told the clutch would start to become a maintenance mod, plus I'm not a big fan of worrying about the clutch coming apart on high RPM launches shooting for those low ET times. Anyone who says a TH400 with a reverse manual valve body and big stall isn't any fun is wrong...

If the car is 95% track car and a "occasionally" driven to a cruise then its fine, and I mean trailered to the track. If you plan on street driving it, goooood luck. With the price of gas If I wanted a stout auto, id go 4L80e all the way, practically a th400 with o/d, more reasonable.

they sell an over drive kit for the 400, but with a 400, 3:73's cruz 65 mph no problem on the highway.
to each is there own, i like both, but for any type of car that will be raced alot, and looking for faster times, 6 speed isnt going to do it unless you spend tons and tons of time figuring it out, and the hole time doing so you eat clutch after clutch and tranny after tranny. lol been there done that. lol

The way I see it is that Justin lost some street races recently and is upset now

I wouldn't bother with a T400 since you will never go to the track and your car has over 100k you should save that $$ for a shortblock.

Also,if you want to see what a T400 will feel like, drive your car down the highway in 4th gear.Never use 5th/6th.

I went TH400 from a t56. I miss the fun factor of the t56, but if your halfway serious about great track times, TH400 all the way. Launching is 10x more fun with the TH400. Roll racing is definitely more fun with the t56. The thing that ultimately made me decide is that I could not keep a clutch for more than 2000 miles. I got tired of the expense/time replacing them. I really don't regret it. My car is 80% track car, 20% street car. The only time I miss overdrive is on the highway obviously. If I were to do it over again, I would take a harder look at the 4L80E. I don't know many that are running them here on this board. I would be curious to know their feedback on the 4L80E...

Hey it's better to run the numbers when your into power and racing then run 14's with 600+hp and tourque Isn't that why we race.

a GV unit is a option but its like 1k last time I checked. In my 70 Chevelle with a TH350, i really considered it but back then like 4 years ago gas was 1.25 and still reasonable lol.

I'd get the 4l80e with a 4000 stall. With the overdrive and a 3.42 gear, you can drive 65-70 mph on the highway at low rpm's.

It's pretty cool racing with just a few power adders and eating people out of the hole and just keep pulling. Your car would screw!

i've had a th400 in the car for a little while now- 3.42 gears 3800 stall both 28" and 26" tires on it.

i hate it and i love it- don't know what else to say. to each his own, but what people don't realize is that THE GEAR RATIOS SUCK IN THE TH400!!!! i used to pop up the front left tire with 2.73 gears/3800 stall with the 4l60e. now with 3.42's and the th400 i can stomp on it as hard as i can and it'll NEVER spin at the track. feels like a slug from a dig.

i say build a th350, nice big stall/ rmvb. trans-brake is overrated since i've heard people get better 60's off of a flash than the brake anyhow- and it's VERY hard on the drivetrain. also can't really use it to it's potential on the street anyway.

if you don't really race the car- stick with the t56 because just cruizing around with the th400 gets annoying. i find myself letting traffic go away so i can punch it and feel the whole reason i put the slushbox in the car.

and forget about driving in the fast lane on the highway for any extended period of time, unless you don't mind turning 4000+ rpms the whole time. driving your 6 speed around in 4th is NOT like being in D in a stalled auto. maybe if your th400 has lockup but that is ++$$ for a lockup setup.

hope that helps...
