Is there any way you can stay in TX?

New Haven is OK compared to the surrounding cities....definitely better than Hartford. If you're into the city life, it's not a bad ride to NY City which is nice to visit. The nightlife is pretty good in New Haven as well.

If you are looking for a nice place to live that is close by, I'd recommend looking in East Haven. It's a close commute and a nice area. Definitely better than some of the other surrounding areas. Then again, I only know from visiting. Maybe some of the other members who live closer will have some more input for you.

Well actually im In VA right now, but i gotta fly back to alaska, then to tx and drive to CT, but theres no way I can stay down there I got orders already. anyways I was lookin at hamden, since in the pics I have seen it looks like a nice place but its a little pricy, Im also looking at middletown since its cheaper, but its a 25 mile ride to work everyday. I have just heard that there were parts of new haven to stay away from and some parts that were good. I am not a city person at all but Im sure ill deal with it. what surrounding cities would you suggest?

Funny, I was going to suggest Hamden.

It certainly was nice enough when I went to school there, but that was 34 years ago!!
I can see it being 'pricey' though. It is about the most 'rustic' suburb that is not a killer (especially in these times ) commute.

The pizza is amazing. Hamden is a nice area too, I have two friends who live down there and like it.

Oh my gosh Pepe's Pizza... gotta go there.
There are a lot of nice clubs/bars in New Haven... I go there decently often. $1500/month after utilities is not a lot of $$ a month to get a nice place within a reasonable commute unfortunately.

Ill be working at the Coast Guard base up there, Unfortunately Im not in the market to buy anything right now but thanks for the heads up, Ive been looking at middletown and theres a few places that arent too pricey but its 45 miles a day or so for commuting back and forth, so Im trying to figure out what to do.

ok, well i would stay the hell away from new haven/west have. my 86 iroc was stolen in west haven in the "good" area which is total bs. imho new haven/west haven is a total **** hole. be very careful around that area. i grew up around there, ansonia is nice and quiet if you are on hilltop, if you are on the other side of town the "pjs" its total garbage and can turn out very bad. if you go to derby make sure your not near ansonia side or you are in a trashy crack infested are(not all but most). shelton, hamden, middletown, hilltop ansonia, stratford, milford, and parts of east haven are what i would recomend honestly. if you have any questions about areas gimme a pm and i can gladly help ya out, i worked for ups, and kirby as well as grew up out there. so ive seen 95% of CT and spent time there.

traffic on 95 and 91 into new haven sucks in the morning, there are other ways into new haven though could be 45 min to an hr, middletown could be nice and it could be a dump, where in middletown were you thinking?
