Default Anybody have an engine :*-(

Hey guys.

Fran at RPM just gave me some very bad news. A compression test has revealed that cylinders 5 and 7 in my motor are shot. The engine needs rebuilt. I unfortunately, don't have the money necessary to get this engine fixed. I'm hoping someone out there local has a decent running LS1 that they would be willing to let go without raping me too hard.

I just can't stand thinking about my dream car sitting in my garage, basically dead. I may still drive it around my immediate area but the days of this engine going on long trips are over. She was supposed to go to Wildwoods next weekend but that's not going to happen. I'm hoping I can find an engine in decent shap that I can throw in while I save money up to rebuild the original with everything better than stock and making some power.

I know I sound like a ***** but I could seriously cry over this. Both because the car is hurt and that I was stupid enough to buy a WS6 as cheap as I did and assume there wouldn't be anything major wrong. If anyone can help me out, let me know. Thanks.

you prob. have a cracked ring land, we did 2 ls1's like that so far both #5+7.
2 pistons are a lot cheaper than a used motor. just pull off the drivers side head and the oil pan and thats it. I hope that helps.

It sounds like that car had a power adder on it before and it was taken off when sold to you. I don't think its too common for the ringlands to go on a stock motor. On a higher mileage FI motor, yes.

Well if you can wrench on your own car and take the motor out, you can get the block cleaned up and add forged components for a couple grand at a repitable engine shop.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck. Chances are depending if the side of the piston broke in a chunk you will have to inspect the cylinder walls too. If the piston stayed together the walls should be ok. Either way you gotta pull the head to look.

Unfortunately I'm not that mechanically inclined which is why I was leaning towards throwing a used motor in it. I figured if I can get a "plug and play" engine, my brother in law and I could probably figure out how to get it installed. If not, I know there are people on this board who might be willing to give me a hand.

I don't have air tools nor a large garage to do any kind of work so I'm looking at taking it to a shop to be rebuilt. Throwing a used engine in will be the quickest and cheapest way I think to get her back on the road at least.

Hey, if you find a plug and play engine it's really not too bad. I JUST put my entire car back together from basically nothing. There was nothing in the car because I gutted it to an entire roller car.

Basically when you remove the sensors---label them.
When you take anything apart take pictures, they last a lot longer than your memory will
Take your time, it seems like you may have two cars???? You could drive the other one in the time being???

It's really not that bad, when your done everything you look back and realize just how easy it really was. Anyways, if you need any help just pm me. If not Fran is an AMAZING guy, and will take great care with and of your car. He has helped me out a gazzilion times.

wow that's a great deal! Wish I would have seen this a few months ago lol. I took a trip home to IL and blew a spring, bent a valve, fucked a lifter. when I pulled the heads a headbolt snapped off in the block so I bought a forged internal LS6 for 3400 plus all the extra goodies.

anyways I was in the same boat when that happened to me, never pulled an engine before but like mentioned before just bag and label everything!! as you pull it! I didn't bag it until I had the heads off and went back to bag but forgot a few bolts but fortunately they were pretty unique. But the labeling helped like you wouldn't believe! I would sell you my old engine too, it's still really solid just has that bolt stuck in there. But I don't see it coming out very easily so I'd rather have it looked at before I try selling it.

as much as it hurts man I know, just have fun with the project and take your time. She'll be running just as good in no time, believe me

I've asked Fran to give me a quote on just those 2 pistons. You guys have been very generous with offers for used and I so appreciate it. You have no idea. Too bad your all about 5 hours away :-(

How difficult is it to replace these 2 pistions WITH THE ENGINE IN THE CAR. Also where would I get the pistons? Dealer? Junk yard? Just want something stock, doesn't make sense to put stronger in when the motor WILL eventually get a rebuild.

we got the 2 pistons from the dealer, $60 each I think. you have to drop the sub frame down to get the pan out. if you leave the sway bar in- the balancer will rest on it, or a chain up top to support the motor from droping.
it looks hard untill you have a piston in your hand and say that's it.....

Just my two cents here, "just popping" in 2 pistons is not the best idea. I don't think I need to explain all the reasons why.

Minitransam: There are a lot of people selling used motors out there. We have a 02 camaro pullout that we did a fresh build on, new cam, etc. that is on the market for $3500 now. However, if Sonic's motor is good to go that sounds like a great deal.
