Bittersweet night at gville raceway, updated dyno results on new engine
#126
So been chasing a high speed vibration. Tore down the rear end over the weekend since rebalancing the driveshaft didn't fix it. Sure enough, two bent axles and still have a vibration in the rear without the axles in there. Working with Eric from MWC on getting Strange to replace the axles. I'm pretty sure this happened on a couple dead hooks with drag radials back on the old motor...as this vibration has been present before I hit the track with the car on the new engine.
It just gets so frustrating sometimes. This is about the 4th time I've seriously considered parting this car out and just wait til I'm outta school to start with another platform. But I guess you deal with this kinda stuff with any build.

...seriously considering swapping to 4L80E in the car since I wanna go f/i anyways and will have a rough time keeping a t-56 together with 700+hp. It would just be a mostly stock 80e in there for now with converter and maybe manual vb (to keep cost out since I'm a '98 and can't directly control in with my computer). Shouldn't be out much, if any money, after selling my t-56 stuff.

huh. I guess getting an aftermarket/newer pcm could be an option as well? I figured all 98-02 cars were pretty much the same in that way. Parts should be interchangeable.
Still got the flexplate from that LQ motor? I know you'll need that. My plan was to look for a "A rated" 80e from a localish salvage yard, take it to a shop and have it checked out/shift kitted, then drop it in with a stall. I imagine ~400whp is childs play for even a stock 80e.

From what I'm reading a stock 80e will handle 500-600hp with a trans go -2 kit and stock everything else (97-up). I can use an automatic fbody flexplate and custom stall...vig, yank, fti, circle d all make one...or use the spacer and run a "normal" 80e stall. I'll be getting a good stall either way, probably use a stock flex plate and yank stall. '98 pcms are different than '99-up. Can either swap pcms (some work involved) or get a tci tranny controller for around $550.

I could also go with a trans go -3 kit and make it a manual valve body....and pretend it's still a stick car, lol. Then I don't have to worry about the computer. Would just need to wire in a t/c lock up switch. I'd rather have the pcm control it though.

Trust me when I say if you want to drag race it more an auto will be more consistent and dependable (overall). And like you said, manual valve body = shifting EVERY TIME. The Nova has a MVB TH400 and it's fun shifting the gears every time..

I hear ya on that Derek. I like rowing the gears, even though I knew it meant being a little slower in the 1/4. And I know you'll break things easier with high hp. Problem is, I didn't know I'd be breaking this stuff at my current power level. I usually have crazy ideas like this while the frustration sets in....and then they fade away as I become a little more level headed. But this idea isn't going away, lol. I'm just seeing if I can somewhat break even by selling my t-56 setup and going to a basic 4l80e setup...just a stocker with manual valve body (which is basically a shift kit from what I understand) and maybe a transbrake while I'm in there, and a good converter. We'll see where I stand after I get these axles measured to see how bad they are.

Yep. All things considered, sticks should be faster due to less power lost through the driveline, but a lot more shock and beating is the normal result.

Wow, epic thread. Glad everything is running for you again
One thing that jumped out at me though. When I saw the pics of the piston parts in the intake I was saying "I hope he doesnt use that again!". I've heard of a few instances of hot piston parts melting into the inside of the intake only to fall out later into a new engine. That could be disasterous and continue your streak of bad luck. Just throwing it out there. Hopefully you really inspected it thoroughly or just retired that intake.

Alright, Strange replaced the axles for just this one time. They said with the weight of the car and the rpm launches I do, I'm at the limit for those axles. Although I was under the impression that these axles could handle a little more than that, it's a good reason to go auto. Anyways, got the axles in last week and no more vibration! Also upgraded to 1/2"x3" screw it studs. I'll be ripping out the t56 sometime this week to put it and all the extras up for sale.

T-56 is sold. I'll be ripping it out tomorrow and meeting the buyer in about a week and a half. Got some auto swap parts from him that I'd need and a good chunk of cash for it. As soon as I get the money I'll be hitting craigslist and junkyards for a 80e. I'm think that since I have time and go through and do a step by step process of throwing an 80e in the car. As Derek knows, our little shop of friends is not scared of any custom work, so this will be a fun little project.
