you pay the tax where you register the car. not where you buy the car. if you buy the car in tallahassee but then register the car in AL, you pay AL county property tax. same goes if you register the car in any other FL county.
most countys here in FL are tiered tax rates. usually something like 7% on the first 5K then 6% after that. i am almost positive leon county is 7.5% for the first 5K then 6% after that 5K amount.

Riddle me this-
I'm about to buy a car from indiana, and then register it in escambia county FL. Would I be out of line if I asked the seller to write a sale price on the title less than what I actually paid for the vehicle? FL sales tax is gonna crush me.
Are there any legal repurcussions for this act?
I'm not a crook, I'm just curious. Does this happen often? I've never really bought a car from a private seller before.

I'm always selling cars. If the price on the title isn't way out of wack from the normal price, there wont be any problems. I've sold some cheap cars, no motors etc.. and have actually had calls on them from the state. I just had to tell them why they were cheap. Personally I feel its ridiculous. Why should they get sales tax on something thats already been taxed??
