Also, we will NOT let a tune out that is any leaner than 13.1 out as detonation is sure to follow. It may make a few more HP on the dyno, but at the expense of a broken ring-land or burn't piston later.
TLewis- I think you got yourself backwards. Last sentence of this link. http://www.fuelairspark.com/Products...p/targetaf.htm

He's not backwards, he said it right. 15 parts air to 1 part fuel is leaner than 13 parts air to 1 part fuel. The more air per unit of fuel, the leaner it is.

Unless you've been building and racing winners for a long tim and run your own shop you probably shouldn't challenge Tracy.

An engine can run leaner under light load part throttle conditions for economy, but under full throttle, high load, high heat conditions it needs to be a little richer and then a hair more for a safety margin. In our case that means around 13:1 WOT.

Was not challenging him! I was referring to A/F ratio in general, not at WOT

Whether you are WOT or part throttle or whatever situation you think makes you right, you're wrong. more fuel is always more rich and less is always more lean.

to the other guy, 14.7 may be stoich, but it's too lean when used in an IC engine. 14:1 is lean in the car world, we're not chemistry majors here, we're tuning cars

I know as a fact, a good friend of mine had a 03 Cobra with a Whipple in it,and had a guy (tuner) dyno-tune his car!!! Well he was supposed be a damn good tuner in the mustang world but after I seen the damage on that motor w/the whipple I was like WTF! Found out it was his A/F it was like 15-16 something like that, that damn tune ending up costing him a new motor. As far as my friend told me, the tuner tried to get the most power out of the car, it was a crazy #(560+) I think Mike did mine very well, If I'm not mistaking the A/F was 13, correct me if I"m wrong Mike!

BTW I didnt want my tread to turn out to an argument about A/F

You are correct in this post. We keep melted pistons to show the effects of tuning too lean (15.1 would be a perfect recipe for disaster). Around 13.1 is pretty good for a NA car. FI we go richer yet.

Yeah this thread got a little out of hand.

I'll admit I was at fault for not realizing the OP's 14:1 A/F was at WOT. I thought he meant 14:1 was lean basing it off of 14.7:1.

Sorry for the confusion.

Mike Norris has always been conservative on his tunes ... saved a lot of motors! But, that's just Mike ... a man for the customer ... not for JUST the money. He'll always tune her for safe numbers - and get you the best power possible for the money.

Thanks for the kind words everyone and just doing what I get paid for. It goes to show that you can not assume everything is correct when you do a simple bolt on. Jeff's car was not "Oh My God!!!" dangerous but definitely way to lean for me at WOT and down the road could have been costly. All ended well and that car is making freak power for what it is.
