Cam for Magnacharger build...
I have an order placed for a Magnacharger from LM Speed for the 2000 TA.
Originally I had decided on the off the shelf blower cam from Thunder Racing, specs are as follows:
214/230 .601/.579 117 LSA
I asked Ed Potter what cam he would recommend and he sent me these specs:
224/232 .581/.595 114 LSA
He said the Thunder cam would make good power, have a slight lope, smooth idle and he's used to using cams with less duration and less intake lift like the one with figures he sent. He also said his cam would have a slightly choppy idle but still be comfortable for a DD.
I'm thinking I'll go with Ed's specs in a custom grind from Thunder, it is his kit and I'm sure he would know best. I haven't received any tech feedback on an email that I sent Thunder yet, so I'm just trying to get some more feedback from you guys here.
The two cams are definitely different.
I'm looking for a cam that has a little lope to it, nothing too loud or choppy, will complement that Magnacharger nice, and possibly bleed off some of the 7-8 lbs. the roots will be putting out. I'm pretty sure with either cam I will be around 500 rwhp, so I'm not really interested in peak numbers but looking for something that's going to be a nice reliable combo. I may be interested in a completely different cam than either of them also.
This will be with Kook's LT's, stock heads and bottom end. I'm going to go with the Patriot Gold double springs, rods, and retainers.
Let me know what you guys think.
John

Nothing good comes from spinning the snot out of those blowers. I vote LS6 or GT2-3.
Here is Steve's black truck that we did some tuning on with a 5.3l and LS6 cam.

So you think the GT2-3 huh? I've read up on this one, it's def. a bit smaller which is ok, how do you think this will perform?
I'm not really looking to spin high.

What is your intended use for the car? That will make a huge difference too. I used the SC-3 from Speed inc, it had 226/234 .598/.599 on a 117 LSA, had no lope it sounded like a stock idle, but the 243 heads, cam, Kooks 1 7/8 headers, and other mods listed below resulted in 545rwhp and 550rwtq on 10lbs of boost, and was my dd for quite a while, giving me no issues at all.

You guys have given me alot of help on some other options. I'm really leaning towards the LPE GT2-3 now.
I'm not after a high-revving heads and cam car which it seems like people are leading me to. If I wanted one, I wouldn't have gone with the Magnacharger and gone with a big donkey dick cam. It's just that the engine will be apart, I'm doing the valvetrain, fuelpump and timing set, might as well do a cam too right?
I'm just not looking for something over the top, but something that will work well with my setup and compliment the blower.

After lots of research, I just placed an order for the LPE GT2-3. Should pull all the way up to 6500, and graphs I saw with a Magnacharger show a very linear gain. Nice!
I'm pretty sure I'll be over 500 RWHP with this combo.

I made 495/510 w/ C5 zo6 cam and every thing else pretty much the same.
Btw unless you pulley to a 2.90 upper you wont see 8#s.
Remember my car is identical to what yours will be w/ the exception of the cam, I have a 2.90 Upper pulley and was only making 8#s, W/ the stock ( I believe) pulley 3.10 you will most likely only see 6#s

With the stock pulley, I should see 7-8 lbs.

I vote for LG's blower cam. I went from the GT2-3 and gained 35rwhp/55rwtq on average. Unbelievable gains. 85rwtq from the start over the GT2-3. What a difference.
You could also go with a little bigger cam from Exotic Performance.
The LG cam is in between the Ed Potter cam and Exotic Performance. 115 lsa

That Ed at LM Speed is cool people. He could spend hours on a phone discussing the possibilities of his product with people. He has an open mind and is also constantly looking for something better. This means at the point you discuss your needs with him, you will get the most current trends and technology -especially with the Eaton/Magnacharger blower systems. This has been my experience with him and why I'd take his advice on cam selection for use with one of his systems.
The 2300 system for use with LS3/L92 heads should be available through LM Speed shortly. It is the system used on the new LS9. That will be the roots type blower to have under your hood.
Just my $0.02.
