you can add 2.75 first gear in the 400, will help with street gears in the rear, but their limited to around 800 flywheel hp, and costs around $600 for the gears
you can build a 4l80e on a budget, if you use a manuel v/b, (unless you have a computer now)and build the trans yourself, for about the same money as a 400

I've got to agree with Zombie. The TH400 is completely streetable. I've been running one in my car for a few years now, and have had great luck with it. Some of it may also have to do with what valve body you use, as mine can be a little cantankerous at times in traffic, but its nothing major. This is even with a loose converter and a healthy rear gear to keep my cam happy. Plenty of highway cruising.

If its going to be a 408 car why even go with a th400........
Go with a Rossler built Powerglide.
Takes less power turn and less of a HP loss.
BMR's crossbrace works for a perfect mount.
With a big cubed turbo car your not going to see a big difference because of the TQ the motor will make.
Opt for a 1.80 1st gear vice the 1.76....
Another plus is one shift......
With a turbo the fall off between gear isnt hard on the setup at all... 1.80 1st and 1:1 2nd
The reason i know the above is because i did it........ drives real nice on the street.
3.54 rear gear and a 28" tall radial.
I would spin 2700 rpm's at 62mph.... not bad at all compared to when the car was a 4L60E car with 3.73's it would be 2500 @ 70 MPH....
Cars came from the factory for years with powerglides......
Any high HP car i ever build in the future will have one
I ran a Chance convertor also and Zombie..... if Chance was gunna sell you a bolt togeather for $1600 id of bought 3-4 of them at that price because the Bolt togeathers retail for $3K each.
His weld togeathers are $1600.......

Yeah I've never known a th400 to be terribly unstreetable unless it has like a 5000 stall or something. Unless you are doing a bunch of highway driving a th400 is certainly streetable, and actually a pretty fun transmission to drive with a mvb and a TB...
