Default New best at SAR

A bunch of us went to San Antonio tonight and i ran my best to date on Drag radials. Right off the freeway after a 2 hr drive.
1st pass
1.8008 60 ft
7.4931 @ 92.46MPH 1/8
11.5724 @ 121.79MPH 1/4

2nd pass
1.8007 60 ft
7.4932 @ 91.89MPH 1/8
11.5963 @ 121.13MPH 1/4
Let cool downa bit.

4th pass and fastest pass
1.8264 60 ft
7.4947 @ 96.82 MPH 1/8
11.5129 @ 123.09 MPH 1/4

fastest MPH for he night was 123.25

The last pass was my worst pass of the night at
11.9349@121.23...... and blew the gasket out of the valve cover and lost about 2 quarts of oil. I was luck my friend Jay got it fixed and we added some oil and headed home. why did it do that?? I am seeing 11 psi of boost.
I am very happy with these times and i cant wait till i geta 9 inch and a set of E.T. drags and really cut some good 60' times. I was running 93 octane and 2 gallons of 103 to be on the safe side. Im off to sleep now. Thanks Johny for driving the rest of the way home.

Congrats bro! Sorry to hear about the gasket, I kinda figured something was up since you didn't call back right away. Jay's da man and can get it all fixed up in a hurry for ya. I'll show ya how to drive that beast when I'm down there in a few weeks for Thunder.

Congrats again!

The gasket went because of excessive crank case pressure!
Possible Ring or piston damage is the worse case..........................
Might want to look at a leak down test..........should prove my theory.
Do it now to be sure, before you fry the entire motor. just my opinion

I am going to look into it. The car blew 2 quarts of oil onto the track. Time for a rebuild. I believe 11 psi on a stock motor is to much and most people on here would agree with me. I am thinking about an iron block setup, but i dont want to add anymore wieght to the car.

Are you sure?

Try putting together a better crankcase breather solution and see how the car is.

John, I dont know if im getting blowby or not. It did blow the gasket out though. I still want to check it. What have alot of people been doing? I was reading that post in the internal engine section about some people just saying it was a bandaide and not a good fix. What did you do to yours or have you not incountered it yet?? I would really like to keep running it this way and see 11 psi all the time and wait a little longer to do my engine rebuildseing that the stock rear needs mu attention soon. Thanks, Kyle

Well you will get some stock blowby for sure.

If you lost a piston crown, the motor (from what I have seen) will chug hard, and puff out the breather bigtime. Now my blower motor will puff a bit out out the breather so I am referring to excessive smoking. Motor might also get lopey.

I am running a looped hose from cover to cover, and the outlet (front outlet on passenger side cover) of my 99 covers is running into a long hose and a wide filter element venting to open air.

John, Do you happen to have a picture of how you have yours set-up??? I understand what you are saying but a pic would help greatly.
Do the 98-99 valvecovers diifer that much??
Now dealing with smoking.... it smoked a little out my oil fill when i added oil the other night at the track.... didnt think much of it. It felt like the car was running a little ruff.... but after a little driving it felt way better. ( i closed the cutout also) Drove the 140 miles back home and parked the car. Sat. morning i checked the oil and it didnt use any on the way home. I drove the car a couple miles to Whataburger and it felt fine. Havent drove it since but i will here in an hour or so. Thanks John and cant wait to meet you in person at Thunder..(you are going right?)

98 valve covers are different, I forge how the pcv lines work? How are they routed?

So it looks like i need to buy a set of 99 + valve covers and go with a bigger breather and see if that works any better first. PSJ do you have any pics of how you did your set up??
Thanks, Kyle

If you look in my webshots you can see my breather setup....those were the tell tale sign that my stock shortblock had minimal life left, the breathers would drip the oil residue on the headers, it was nastttttttyy

BOS, When i blew the gasket it shot oil all over the underside of the car. It was about two quarts. I had put 6 quarts in the car because i was told that teh LS1 eats oil when pushed hard. I had some of my other friends say that they only run 5 quarts and never have any problems. I just believe i am getting blowby. i will look into getting a set of 99+ valve covers and replumbing it the way you have it BOS.

Yea, my new motor eats a little oil, but there isn't even a wisp of smoke that comes out of those breathers...

I don't have pics handy, but here are a few comments...

-How are 98 covers setup? The point is to have a breather for each side or just one breather for both. I did one for both. I do NOT like Metco breathers on our cars, the breathers will drip oil since they are at an angle and I think that is a fire hazard.
-I ran a hose from the back of one to the back of the passenger side rear. So that left me with one outlet, the front one on the passenger side. I have long hose on that one and a breather mounted on my passenger fender so I can monitor what it's doing.
-I'd run 6 qts for racing, and bring some extra oil too. Check regularly.

You mean like the Metco breather? I don't like how they drip oil after a run.... Drips oil right on #2 header primary no thanks.
