Question Moving Motor forward in F-Body

Would it be possible to move the motor and trans a few inches forward by eliminating the motor mounts and using a custom motor plate? I know it would be a lot of work (like making a custom trans crossmember, getting a longer drive shaft, etc...) but I just want to know if it would be possible. I'm just trying to get some more clearance from the cowl and every inch counts. Trying to get a Magnacharger to fit in a F-Body. Thanks

Also, how do you think moving the motor/trans forward would affect drivability and stuff like that?

not to deter you from your goal but that is quite a hair-brained idea you have there

if you are just trying to get cowl clearance.. then just cut the wiper well area out. if you need firewall clearance cut the firewall out and weld a recessed box in.

that keeps the bux down on the whole project and your car geometrically correct.

havent looked into this myself of course, but thats what i would try first.

my second opinion since you didnt ask lol is that if you are putting this time and effort into the build.. that you do turbo

To move the motor forward youd have to make a custom K-member. because even on my BMR on my car the oil pan sump area is only about a half an inch away from it. So youd either have to cut and lower the pipe that goes across or cut and move the pipe forward. Major PITA! plus your steering geometry would be all messed up because the steering rack is also bolted to that cross piece that needs to be moved. If you want the magnacharger to fit my sugestion would be to lower the whole engine trans and k-member. basicly just do a front body lift like on 4x4s.

Perhaps a slight deviation, I'd _maybe_ look into lowering the engine in the engine bay if that would help.

Stealth on here has his engine lowered a bit.

I'm not sure how to word this but I'll try anyways. If I were to cut the cowl how flush with the firewall would it be? Would there be any remaining part of the cowl hanging over the intake?

There's room for it if you dont mind doing a little sheetmetal work, or having a custom shop do it for you.
Figure out how much room you need, add an inch in every direction, and cut. Form new shhetmetal to fit the shape of the hole you need, and weld it in.
It's about a day's work to a skilled fabricator.

I looked into it, it is hard to lower the motor even with a K-member, because all the steering stuff and oil pan don't give you enough room to do much. If you want one you need to loose the windshield wiper.

You could probably get away with just losing the passenger side wiper, or engineer a creative solution to keep it.

Look at this picture.

http://www.lingenfelter.com/lingenfe...25&pf%5Fid=544

now this one http://www.magnacharger.com/images/ls1sc2a.jpg

Now look at this one http://images.search.yahoo.com/searc...&no=5&tt=6,150

Pay close attention to the third injector from the front on both sides of the magnacharger intake , Now go pop the hood on the closest ls1 f body, you will see the third injector is right about the start of the cowl. Being that only maybe 1/2-3/4 of an inch of belt hang past the third injector I really see no reason why it wont fit, I have not tried it yet but eventually I will.

I think it would be pretty easy to get it to fit but nobody wants to chop up there car. I think that there`s a chance that if you cut to much away from the cowl that under torque the windshield might crack. Dont know for sure but if you think about it cutting that will remove alot of structural integrity, remember these things rely on the body for strength not a frame.

Why reinvent the wheel. MUCH easier ways to get that hp! Why make things harder than necessary? Good luck!
