Default borg warner S400 turbos any good?

I was just checkin out a sponsors turbo selections and these seemed to stand out. 850-1000 hp ratings with a/r's of 1.10. would one or two of these suffice on a 383 or bigger motor?

They are too physically large to fit 2 without some serious work.

I've done quite a bit of searching about them lately. They are great turbos it seems, just very physically large. They are T6 flanged turbos, and are the same physical size as the larger S88/S91 turbos.

Yes same as the S88 and S91's. We carry and build the S400's here, but like stated, the down side is they are HUGE. 50+lbs for the T6's and 40+lbs for the T4's.

Its a big turbo but it will fit its just a little on the tite side. On my 347 its not all that bad to spool up also even with the 1.32 hot side. The little lag it has just allows the car to get moving a little bit more before it comes on and it comes on hard when it spools up.

Here are some pics of how it fits on my car.

wouldnt the heat from the turbo being so close have an effect o the radiator? It looks like it barely touches and if it doesnt not by much.

Yeah its real close about 1/4 inch at the flange. But at the time when looking for a good place to put it I did not have the radiator and was using cardbord to mock up where the radiator would be. Then after welding it the cross bar in front of the radiator thats how it ended up fitting. Im having trouble with the car running hot but I think it has more to do with the lack of fans and the fact that the radiator was converted into a dual crossflow setup. Even with the 160 stat after sitting at lights it will get up to 210 and it cant cool back down unless you shut it off. This was my first time ever building a kit and I learned a ton about what to do and what not to do. I have been thinking about building a new kit and changing all the things I did wrong on this one.

are those the stocker fans in the last pic? you could always try wrapping the turbo to help reduce radiant heat to the radiator. which S400 is that by the way?

The fans are summit racing pushers one 12 inch and one 10 inch. I was thinking about wrapping it and will if I keep this kit. But there is a lot of things about this setup I would like to change. The turbo is a s475 with the 1.32 a/r. If you use this turbo the one thing I will tell you to do is what I did and have the housing machined to use a 5 inch v band. The stock setup can be a pain to get apart if you need to remove it.

The mustang guys like them, of course they like mustangs too!! LOL
they make big power, spool late and are very large and heavy, you have to find room for a huge 5" downpipe.

Yes we build and sell alot of them to the mustang crowd. You can though go with the T4 version if you want to shrink them down some. Also the ST80 is a great option, and we are offering them on sale next month. Had alot of requests for them. They are available in T4 and T6 with or without the race cover.

it works =)

but my frineds 76mm precision t4 based turbo has gobs more midrange ( bout 100-120 WHP and torque) over mine but up top its the same. Then again, hes a 6.0 liter and im a 5.7

Yeah the 1.32A/R with a 96mm turbine really kills mid-range. That's why we offer the T6 1.10A/R with 83mm turbine wheel. Makes a huge difference in spool.

I have a S475 on my truck, still working out the bugs. I need more waste gate, even with a 50mm I can't keep the boost down. But mine is a little different, lol.
