Default T-netics 66BB for a 5.3?

I see most people running a 70mm at minimum but I was curious what other people thought about this combo. I have an 87 GN with a Turbonetics 66BB (F1 wheel) running on my stock motor and I'm thinking of switching to an LS based motor (5.3 truck with LS6 cam) but didn't know if this turbo was too small or not. It has a 3 bolt .63 exhaust housing so that would have to be swapped with a .96ar T4 flange.

Spool quick and make great torque, but top end would suffer. Even with a 5.3 motor. How much power though are you planning to make?

66 should support that but your rev range is limited with a 66 comp wheel.

So would it be more worthwhile to sell the 66BB and get a 70 or 76 non-BB? Assuming I'm using a 5.3 stock shortblock with LS6 cam+springs.

Depending on how effecient the heads and cam is, you can get around 600-700hp from a 66mm. With that turbo, your gonna be right around 70% effeciency at 5500rpm. After that, the effeciency drops to 60% by 6000rpm. Its a good turbo for the low-midrange but runs out of steam after 5500rpm.

I run a bb72 with a .96 housing on the awd express van. I also run 317 heads and a z06 cam. Otherwise all stock 5.3. It makes boost instantly, its actually hard to drive and not be in boost. Its running 14/15 psi now on 91 with 50 50 water meth and uses a cummins deisel intercooler. At 6600 lbs its trapping 103-105 mph and goes mid to high 12's. That figures to over 600 hp. The kicker...............even with the z06 cam, it likes being SHORT shifted.
I tried everything........and it runs best so far shifting at 5800.....and I might try going lower then that even.

I have a lot of LS6 cam turbo dyno sheets that show just that.

On the other side....is zombiess car. A 370 with stock 317 heads, z06 cam.....making power to 6800.......well......it would obviously make substantial gains with heads or more cam, but it doesnt fall off. BIG turbo though......with the sx80.

Seems like turbo size is about equal to cam when figuring out the rpm ceiling.

You are absolutly correct, these have all been t4 units with smallish turbine wheels.
