A few questions about Twin Turboing a GTO.

If i come to a shop with a full kit how about how much would it be to get it installed?

And what would be smarter moneywise, getting it installed and tuned at one shop, or letting one shop do the install and going elsewhere for the tune?

I dont know if this info is needed but the car is a 2006 and is 6 speed(yes clutch will be upgraded with install)

 

Not sure on cost at all but I would have the shop thats doing the install perform the tune as well, that way they are familiar with the kit and car if something seems off or goes wrong. Aside from that your not gonna be able to drive it to the other shop without tuning.

 

That's too general of a question. Too many variables. Most shops will charge you hourly so it will depend on the rate vs the amount of time. How complete is the kit? How much modification will be required? If they have a good tuner in house then I would have it all done in the same place. Just FYI, TYPICALLY, there is more to installing a turbo kit than just bolting **** together. Expect to run into snags and add a $500 cushion (on the low side) to the price quoted for unexpected crap that you may end up having to buy.

 

Most shops would charge hourly when supplying your own stuff.Twin turbo in a GTO is not an easy job and can be time consuming.I hear APS kits can be 30-40hr's labor which can be $2800 -$5k in labor depending on shop.

Yes,have the shop build and tune the car.Then blame can't go anywhere if there is a problem.

 

Ouch did not expect it to be that hard of a job, just too hard for me to do it with no experiance turboeing any cars.

Next step is calling around shops i suppose. If its around $3,000 for install and tune i guess i will just install a supercharger myself and go get it tuned at a shop.

Sure it can. He is supplying the kit.
Plan on having the car down for a while also. Most shops don't drop everything to do a 30-40 hr install. They take their regular quick turn around work and do yours in between. And if they work on alot of GTO's, you're car could become a parts car when they need something quick. Just saying because I have seen it happen more than once.

 

One of the reasons I decided on the Procharger F-1A/C. Way easier install.

On the other hand. If you can use a hammer, a wrench, and a grinder, then you can install that kit. If you have a garage spend $1500 on a lift and do it yourself. If you can't have your car down for work, buy a $500-$1000 beater and sell it when you are done.

 

This is why you see alot more supercharged cars.We charge $1k to $1600 for supercharge install/tunes.
The twin turbo setup takes alot more time.If it's a rush job the price goes up to full hourly charge.If the shop gives a decent deal they are ussually losing money doing the job.

Im not sure i would suspect that to be the answer. i would lean more toward to the fact that as of now, there is only TT kit available for the gto. Gen TT. Im not sure the cost of the kit itself, but have heard its salty. SO with that said. Most people i know of who have turbos or superchargers for that matter do the install themselves. I believe it the best choice. IF you can do something like weld then outsource that part. Much easier, and then You get he satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself. THERE IS NO BETTER FEELING! IMHO. Now with that said. Buy the TT kit, and install it. you should be able to handle it. if you cant, get a friend. youll save alot of money man. lots of money for other things like upgraded axles and such.

 

NicD, one of the best tuners in the Phoenix area installed a GEN-TT in a garage with a lift. There were some things that had to be overcome, but not to bad. I would definitely have cost a lot to have a shop do it.

This is my first turbo car too, hell this is my first project doing any kind of performance mods aside from intake and exhaust. Man up and get the experience, you cant keep paying a shop to do the work...you gotta learn it sometime! Its so much fun and youll have a much greater appreciation for the car if you do the work yourself

 

......once you get all the bugs worked out. Until then you will want to slit your wrists everytime you run into a snag.

Once you get it all sorted out, there is no better feeling. If it was easy, everyone would do it.

 

Well ya but thats something to be expected, we have a 7 month winter here and Im going to be firing up mine in a couple weeks. That gives me like 3 months to work out boost leaks and other BS, Im really looking forward to it!

 

I would check around take it to a shop who has done more then aone GTO,I built my own setup.
