Default high HP converter question

What converters or trannies ya'll running for the high hp turbo set ups. 1000rwhp+

Was wondering if you are getting special converters or tranny built.

I have been hearing that the high hp builds that the converter is being pushed into the motor causing the engine thrust to go out.

Heard something about building a thrust into the tranny?

Anyone else hear this or done something about it.

I'm not quite at 1000rwhp but this new 421"/YSi build should get me damn close, and a little spray will finish the job. I am running a Hughes-built 4L80E and a Vigilante 9.5" 5-disc lockup converter that will handle it and lock up under WOT. The Vigilante is machined down from a 98lb. chunk of steel.

I think you might be talking about anti-ballooning plates used a lot in heavy nitrous verters to stop them expanding like a Jiffy Pop under heavy loads. I am not expert enough to explain the forces and issues, and how the plates work, but I dug this up:

"The converter on the left has an anti-balloon plate added, while the one on on the right has a stock-style cover. The plate helps the converter resist flexing and expansion in the thin hub area under extreme conditions. These plates come in various diameters and thicknesses depending on the application and are recommended for high-horsepower applications, especially with a power-adder like N.O.S. or forced induction."

call and ask Chris@Circle D, he builds his converters from scratch with multi-disc clutches and all and is always willing to answer questions. Not to mention hes built converters for several current record holding vehicles. If there was one person i knew that both had the answer and was willing to share it, it would be him.

running an ATI superglide II and an ATI fuel/blown extreme converter. Phil just switched to this setup too. Zero thrust issues.

dont forget that converter spacing is really important. I believe improper converter spacing has caused quite a few thrust problems as well.

Can you explain that? To much space? not shimmed correctly?

too little space causes the tranny to try to push the converter forward. Need 1/8-3/16" spacing between flexplate and converter when converter is fully seated on the trans.

If I understand correctly there must be a slight balloning or flexing of the convertor under load?

that can happen, but its also caused by the trans fluid pushing the converter forward on high-hp turbo cars...

I am running a Yank PY3400e converter, several others on here run it,Cablebandit,etc..It is supposed to be very efficient but it was recommended by Yank not to lock it up on dyno or at full throttle with my planned power levels..800 to 1000rwhp on this current engine and fuel system.

I also have an RPM bascially top of line 4l80e trans in the car.

I have no numbers to share yet either dyno or track but hope to get both this coming season. I got the trans swap done at near end of last season and wanted to finish up a few things before the car hits track and dyno.

I was going to talk to Chris at Circle D - just wanted to see what everyone was doing.

Thanks for all the input.
