Time and patients.. the converter is at Lenny's shop. Will not be back for this weekend. Next weekend. Spark plug issue - solved; intercooler will be done. Will need to scale it again with the new springs. Can't wait. Some full 1/4's would be nice.

Thought I would finally post an update on my build.

Slow going. The converter didn't get here until late that week. Had to wait another 2 weeks for the track to open.

Found out what the SS likes on spark plugs (NGK 9's - gaped at .015). Got the intercooler fixed. Converter came in and installed. Finally ready for the track.

Lenny (at no fault of his own) tightened the bottom end a little to much. Top end is great. Only about 7% loss at top end. Could not get the turbo to spool off the line to save us. Best 60' was 1.7. But the MPH was great at 151. Time only so-so, 9.8. Only waste-gates only (10-12lbs boost).

Back to the drawing board for the converter - and will be sent back to have the front end loosened up. Any way to get to the track (2 weeks ago) we decided a small shot on the trans-brake would get the big-guy to spool up. Changed the oil, got everything to put the nitrous on. Started up the SS - 3lbs of oil pressure. ****. No track again. Tore the bottom end apart. Bearings looked great. No metal. Took the oil pump off. Seemed to be ok. Any way - new bearings (just to be safe) and a new melling oil pump.

Finish it up tonight. Started it up - 58lbs of oil pressure. Cool . Just need to wire up the nitrous and we will be off to the track on Saturday.

Baby steps. These build can be a PIA. Thanks to Joey, the SS is looking better and sounding better than ever.

We'll see what this weekend brings.

you got the wrong cam then

Phil and I run re-freaking-diculously tight converters and can spool them...

what did it flash to on the brake?

Not sure that the converter will flash just on the turbo. We have tried to get it to come up. Even at 4200 rpm we are only see 1.5-2lbs of boost. Now you add just a 90shot (we only use it to spool, nitrous shuts off at 9lbs of boost). At 4000 rpm - 9lbs of boost. We tried it each way this last weekend.

Saturday was a bust as the battery died. It would some-what charge, but was basically dead when we got back to pits. Took it back to the shop. Did a couple of test to make sure that it was only the battery. It was. Put in a new cheap-o. Put it back up on the dyno just to make sure the tune was ok. The coil dwell was off. Re-tuned. Did and-ok 890rwhp on 12lbs of boost. Back to the track on Sunday.

No nitrous the 1st pass. 1.71 60' (****), but the 1/4 looked promising. 1/8 mile was 6.5 at 118. 1/4 mile 10.02 at 147mph. Max boost 11lbs.

2nd pass: added the nitrous (but I didn't let it get up on the 2-step), 1.68 60' (again on 1.5lbs of boost), 1/8 mile 6.4 at 119; but the 1/4 was 9.91 at 157mph. Max boost 15lbs.

3rd pass: again with the nitrous, decided to let it get up on the 2-step, blew the tires off, got out of it (hoping for it to recover, it didn't). Our track will not take 9lbs of boost off the line.

Oh well. We finally have a base line. Sunday was the 1st day we can actually say it was a good day at the track. Just need to get the 1st 1/8 mile down, and than we can add some boost.

Another leason: Becareful on what you use from the previous build (oil pump (shitted out); battery (shitted out).

The problem is prolly in the turbo. Literally IN it. Like it swallowed an animal or small child. Prolly should check that out.
What you are goin through is what Im afraid of when i finally get mine to the track. The persistant 1 small ******* thing that keeps ya from gettin the results you want. 10 trips later you get what you want outta it just in time to sell it cause ull get more money that way then just burning it to the ****** ground.
Sigh

all new big builds are like that. everything is pretty much new, and trying to figure out what works and what doesnt takes time.

Im going to be the lucky one that doesnt have to go through as much. most of the stuff learned off of daves car will be put towards mine.

The car is coming around. Couple more sessions and it will be time to turn up the boost.

I have owned this car since it was new (25 miles on it). Doubt I will be selling it any time soon.

I have said it before, time and patients.

Finally started to get the SS dialed in and the trans decided 1100rwhp was enough. We knew it was the week link. Just ordered a new Neal Racing Transmission PowerGlide. It is top of their line. Now no more worries about the trans. Our local track closes this weekend. Now we will end up traveling, maybe to Ceder Falls, Iowa on 24-26 Sep. A lot will depend on shop schedule and IF the trans gets here as promised.

Got the 60' back down into the low 1.4's, 1/8 into the 5's and 1/4 back into low 9's - all on 12lbs of boost.

Last pass - a month ago - found out how much hp/boost a stock 6.0l crank will hold.

1200hp and 23lbs of boost it let go. Put a hole the size of my fist in the iron block. Yet another new engine next year.

Never did really get this set up dialed in. IMO the 370ci was just to small for the 106MM.

Best was a 1.45 60'; 9.19 at 157mph. Very very lazy 5.90 1/8th at 125.

Oh well up and newer next. Very possible going to be going with a BBC (550ci).

Sorry to hear about the engine

Why not go with a high dollar (big) small block like some others on this site are using? Something that can hold what you are throwing at it? This way you wont have to reconfigure everything.

That might be the answer not knowing all of the answers surrounding everything.

I was just throwing it out there. He has a lot of time/money into the way the car is setup now. Changing it to a big block car will only make him have to re-do a lot of that

What I have seen from other LSx builds that go fast, they rebuild every 50-60 passes (or at least once a year). The big block will hold the power much longer.

Money!! That is the problem. A total turn key BBC as priced by a couple of companies (that will hold 2000+ HP) costs around $20K. An LSx block that will hold 2000hp will costs around $35-40K. We will be building what ever engine at the shop.

Nothing is in stone. If I go BBC, I'll be selling off what is left of the engine (heads, cam, lifters, oil pump, etc). For now the car sits in the trailer. We have NOT torn it apart to see what the damage is.

Thanks guys

David
