Default Ceramic Coating... mask vbands and inside turbine housings?

I am dropping off all the hot side parts for my front mount kit for my GTO and my buddies front mount kit for his LS1 RX7 tomorrow. Is it necessary or advisable to mask off the vbands from the coating? Will they still seal if they're coated?

How about the turbine housings... I imagine we want to mask the insides of those to prevent buildup and interference with the turbine wheels... any insight?

Thanks! Pics will be up when they're both done.

I hope you guys are kidding.

No masking is necessary. SOMETIMES, depending on your coater, some gentle sandpapering is necessary in the turbine outlet. The turbine wheel can rub on occasion, but after a bit of massaging it's fine. I have coated everything from 52mm - 114mm turbine housings and they are fine in all applications.

The v-band thing is just ridiculous. If they aren't sealing because of the coating there is an underlying issue. I have seen plenty of warped v-bands from people welding without it clamped down.

Not to steel the thread, but what material should be used for the coating?

A reputable ceramic coating shop. Many people refer to it as "Jet Hot" coating, however Jet Hot is simply a brand. (IMHO)

Depends on what you are coating. Typically they go 1mm (or so more) on turbine housings and other places.

I dropped everything off. 3 GM cast iron manifolds, one stainless custom manifold, 2 turbine housings, 1 downpipe, and 2 crossover pipes. I told them to mask the vbands and any threads, and the inside of the turbine housings. Hopefully I made the right choice. They said $600-700 for all 9 pieces. I didn't think that was too bad at all considering all of the blasting and masking work involved.

Yeh, if I was a math wiz I would figure the yearly ratio on us. LOL!

What gets me is I feel like I am on this forum all the time!

I saw someone on here that has been a member for like 2 years and their post count was over 15,000! How can you answer or ask that many questions that fast!

Sorry for the thread highjacking. Just injecting some fun.

Downpipe is about 3-4 feet, crossover is at least 4 feet total. The other crossover pipe for the RX7 is crazy and probably has... 8-10 feet total. It's more of a Y pipe.

Masking the turbine housings is a good idea. If you coat them on the inside, the clearance between the bearing housing/heat shield and turbine housing becomes tighter and clocking the turbo becomes a pita.
