Default Glide or TH400?

well since this is for a boosted car, i figured I would ask you guys.

sold a 4l60e, looking at a glide or th400. I have a glide laying around, but it needs rebuild and is all stock right now. I do not have a converter for either one.

Car is a 312 CID tc78 going to be pushing about 20PSI. Going for 700 at the wheels.

It is a *some what* street car, as it will be driven on the street to the track and back, and every now and than to a cruise night (10 miles each way at most)

Car has 3.00 rear gears. on a 26" tire currently, may go up to a 28 later still unsure.

Cam is a 216/214 113+2 so power comes on pretty early and still revs kinda high.

+1 on the GM 5.0! Where's the build thread? Will you see any highway? You may need that 3rd gear with the TH400

3rd gear in a th400 and 2nd gear in a glide are both 1:1, so they will run the same rpm in top gear...

basically it comes down to the weight of the vehicle...if youre over 3100lbs, go with the th400

Glide is great for bracket racing - very consistent on launch. For anything on the street, a 3 speed is likely a better choice. Low gear on a glide is onoy 1.82 to 1 - really need to slip a converter to get moving with one of these.

Wth smaller engine, you should consider a well built TH350. They are typically .1-.2 faster than 400 version, much lighter guts. With "only" 700 hp, you are in a good range for the 350. Converter for 350 & 400 are interchangable.

see, my local trans shop told me either a glide or th400. They said it might be pushing it with the TH350. I want something thats going to be in there that i'm not going to have to worry about breaking. If a 350 will get me there, thats better since they're cheaper.

With that info I would go with a TH400, or a TH350 if you want something that wont eat as much HP.

98Z28CobraKiller, has a lightly built TH350 in his and he's running high 8s. I think if it was beefed up a little more he would have zero issues with it.

GLIDE. Although it will hate the 3.00 gear out of the hole. Most decent glides come with TH400 input shafts too so you just run TH400 converters. I would deefinitly pass on the TH350 idea. Do it once, do it right. No need to move to a REAL trans down the road

If you are going to make over 1000 to rear tire go with the glide, we tried to run 400 for awhile we would leave in 2nd gear on some tracks where hooking was a problem it's not internals it's the case we've used a glide for the pass two years never looked back,178 low straight cut lots of noise but they hold up

see, I was thinking the glide would help more on the street as well. With the 4L60E i had hard time with bigger motors not building much boost in 1st gear. Are glides decently easy to build yourself? Thats also on thing, I want to pick up the shell, and do everything myself with it. I did a th350 about a year ago and it was fine but I sold it and the kid has no issues with it.

I say Th400/4L80E. You won't have to build as much boost off the line to get the same 60'

well, we have a local swap meet coming up in a couple weeks. I am going to see what I can find there at a reasonable price. It looks like whatever I can find for the right price will be what I end up going with. I will let you guys know. Probably go th400.
