Default new member, here's my dragboat 5.3 single turb turd

im tom, longtime member on yb and performanceboats.com. here's my lil dragboat motor, goin into a 300lb jetboat hull, will be turning 6500 on whatever boost level i've gotta to turn my impellor that fast lol
motor is a lm7 i converted to a 58x/4x signals. runnin a msd6012 ignition, ais 3 nozzle water/meth injection, qft spec built 750ban carb, csu hat, hybrid s480 i got from jose at forced inductions(1.1ar small turbine with a 80mm et-r wheel arh arh), aem wideband. i made the exhaust system myself, embee performance coated it and the turbine for me. hope to make 750 at the crank, which will push my lil lite dragboat into the 115+mph range in the 1000ft. motor has elgin beehives i set up at 155lbs seat/450 open, arp rod bolts/arp headstuds/ ls7 lifters/comp pushrods/218/229 545lift on a 114 cam. jp performance 4x ls7 double roller billet set.

here's my 1st attempt at a turbo blowthru dragboat set-up, its a twin s475, twin a2w(cooled by 70*lake water hehe ) c&s 900cfm blowthru, aeromotive belt drive/reg, ev pro hat, twin 50mm gates. the motor is a pro1 headed 9.3 to 1 496bbc with the good stuff inside, callies crank etc.. motor is making over 1600hp is all i know, goin off our impellor chart for the new impellor in the jetpump and intake pressure on the jet.run pumpgas to 18lbs, 110 at 28lbs. its a fun ride, i convinced my uncle to let me sell off his old blown injected and nitrous fed 540bbc and do this for him instead. we picked up major hp/tq over the old set-up and turning the same rpms with less cubes and on pumpgas instead of nitrous/plus race fuel with the blown dealio. puts a hurting on the nitrous and blown boats in the area

1st pic is me wishin i didnt have to race with a passenger, but went ***** out anyways as shown in the next pic lol

im a gm mastertech and to be honest this is my 1st ls engine performance build, i do alot of work on em at work but ive never thought much of em till i started reading up alil lol. i've finished my motor and i've started on another for my uncle to put in his 17ft 300lb hull jetboat for next spring. yall have a better guess than i do bout what it'll make at the crank, im not sure, jus wanted it to be small lift and turn 6500 on my fresh jetpump , bought a cam i thought would do it, that'll put me where i wanna be in the 1000ft.
ive got 3 good rebuildable 5.3 pullouts, couple of 6.0 pullouts, 1 all alum 5.3 from a 08 yukon, and im waiting on a alum blockd 6.2liter i pulled from a denali to be core released by gm and i'll start on that 1 to replace this 5.3 i already done, but wanna play with the 5.3 1st. meanwhile i'll forge out the 6.2 soon as i get to take it home. may not be able to run big boost with it but the weight difference will really help out in my lil 16ft dragboat.having so many ls motors its kinda a no brainer that a 700hp ls 5.3 will get in frt of a 700hp bbc all day long ontop of water, so i'm gna try and ive got plenty of spares on hand in case i get alil over zealous

its spooky to say the least, that lil white boat i was racing in that pic was topdog that day, i sat and watched him saw off everybody, then i decided i wanted a try, but my uncle stuck a drunk female he was trying to lay on the bow into the boat with me. the white boat is a big cube, big nitrous bbc, and we leave side by side from a barely moving start and it didnt stand much of a chance the whole dragboat community has been doggin turbos for so long they said it'd never work competively and i knew differently, gave it a go on my uncle's dime and it paid off.

I have an '18 biesemeyer with a 454 in it I've been looking to upgrade and you're giving me some great ideas. If you have an old setup you want to sell let a boater know.

I don't know to much about boats and turbos but to run a prop large enough to not hit the rev limiter on the top end must put a large load on the engine to accelerate it. Turbochargers build boost with engine rpm and engine load.

thanx guys, didnt know if you fellas would be interested in the dragboat thing, but i see lotttsss of potential in turbo ls motors in dragboats, they're jus too lite not to wanna do it. several members on the boat site i regular have done the ls install into their jetboat, its nothing new, but far as i know this is the 1st single turbo blow thru carb motor goin into a dragboat.

think of my jetpump being a 3500 stall convertor basically. by the time i'm hooked up leaving the hole, a load is instantly applied to the motor to spool the turb. on the tt496 i did , we run the biggest impellor(aggressor aaa-cut) we could buy in it, makes the motor go into a load well 10ft from start, we were actually having an issue of goin into full boost too soon and i installed a aem truboost on it so i could scramble from 18lbs to 28lbs after i had the boat set. labor day racing basically proved to me i could be into full boost faster than the guy next to me could get into his 2nd stage of nitrous. its worked out great, before im 30ft outta the holeshot with the tt496, its eating at 28lbs turning impellor 7800

few other pics of my boats i've built raced then sold lol, vicious cycle. i love to build em but when im done i get bored and sell em, start on another.

the red and white boat is my condor tx19, i built a 505bbc for it with a 2stage nitrous express setup, 200hp on 1st stage/250hp on the 2nd for total of 450hp. it'd run 107mph in less than 800ft from a deadstop start.

the picklefork is a boat me and my twin 11yr old sons bought from cali , yanked the motor and upgraded to a 12.5 to 1 468, no nitrous. built it to a run a stocker tunnel class , it'd run 84 in less than 900ft on jus 91octane, sold it 6months after i bought it cuz the race i built it for got rained out, drove 500miles to get there lol. made a quik 2g's tho, woohoo lol

blue and white with flames is my 1st jetboat, i painted and redid it all, including interior(didnt cover em tho). was a 460bbf 12 to 1 with a 200hp shot, wasnt real fast but it'd et good, ran 84 in less than 800ft

the lil black and white boat is my current project, usually takes me a winter to build a boat but divorce stuck a fork in me last winter and it turned into a 2 winter deal lol, ill have it ready by january. it weighs 300lbs without rigging, should weigh rite at 1150lbs race ready with me sitting in the boat, that's at least 500lbs lighter than any boat ive ever built , lite lite lite. its 16ft, tiny thing.

Tom, you've built some nice quick boats! How does your uncle's blow thru deal drive around? Part throttle, cruiseing etc?

runs exactly like a na 9.3 to 1 compression 496 until the boost comes in. we'll cruise the local lakes at 80mph+ and it wont even be into boost till i shove it past the carb secondaries, then holyyyy **** we were all concerned lag would be an issue and we'd end up runnin a shot of nitrous to be able to compete cove racing but nope, i can be at 10lbs of boost before a nitrous boat can even get into the nitrous i bought a aggressor mag bronze aaa-cut, which is the same as a berkeley aaaa-cut, so the motor see a huge load immediately , which in turn lites the turbs off way before we're actually ready for em.i was standing the boat up leaving hard at 32lbs of boost and it was uncontrolable, then took off the manual boost controller, put on a aem tru-boost and now we jus leave it on our pumpgas max setting of 18lbs, and i set the duty cycle for the scramble to go to 28lbs when i smash the scramble button on the s/w.the initial 18lbs comes in super fast and as soon as i feel the boat taking its set, i lay into the scramble and generally jump a boat ahead right at the starting line hehe. basically i've done it all in dragboats, big nitrous/big blown engines and nothing is as driveable or as powerful as blowthru carb engines in them another plus is you can actually carry on a convo while driving, even with 5in dumps on the turbs, she's pretty quiet till they start singing
