Welding V Bands To Truck Manifolds?

Here's my results. I sandblasted my manifolds and they came out looking like no cast iron I've ever seen. And when I cut the factory flanges off with the bandsaw the raw metal looked more like steel. Then I remembered that somebody on here had welded their flanges with a flux core mig machine.
So for ***** and giggles I ran a couple of beads on my scrap, one with 312 rod and one with regular mild steel rod.
Sure doesn't look like any cast iron I've ever welded.
I tried welding some mild steel scrap to the other end of my scrap flange.
312 rod or plain old steel rod, it doesn't seem to care...?
So I just went ahead and tigged one of my flanges on using 312 rod and 180 amps. What is this stuff???
On the other side I had to put a transition piece that went from the oval of the manifold to the 2.5" round flange. I beat my 2.75" mild steel piece into a oval, welded it on the manifold. Then I beat the other side back to round again, after it was welded to the cast manifold! Then I welded the stainless flange to the mild with more 312 rod.
I did not preheat, post heat, or do anything special. Whatever this alloy is it welds great. I almost want to do it again so I can get nice stacks of dimes! Thanks for all your input.

Sure dont look like Cast to me.. lol.. I was going to just go from a flange to a vband like shown above, but this has me thinking I would be wasting my time.. I am going to have to dust of the mask, and get to work.

I just picked up a set of cast manifolds, and was cleaning them up,and found a small crack in one of them. After reading this, should I be able to grind a small groove in the crack and then weld a small bead to fill it up, and be okay? That way I won't need to find another manifold.

Like it has been said before, Flux or no flux core, and pre and post heating is reccomended but not required. I am simply going to tack mine together with my Craftsman flux core welder and then take it to the shop to have someone go over my welds. Last time it cost me only $20 bucks to have a stainless WG flange welded to my cast GTP manifold, and it held like a charm. I am now adding two SS V-band flanges to both manifolds.

If you decide to go with that particular welder then at least inquire exactly what his method and technique are going to be (MIG, TIG, or stick). Then double check his plans with what has already worked on the board and make your choice.
