Default Procharger w/twins - questions

new to superchargers, want to be safe
LT-1
383
forged motor
D1SC @ 12lbs
550whp
91 octane
rich tune - runs real crisp and strong
street car
NO MONITORING OR TUNING ABILTY YET

INTERCOOLERS:how well do the stock twin intercoolers work?

would a small fan on top of each one help draw air through = cooler charge?

I do hate all the pipes to them -

anyone get a front mount in a 93-97 T/A? worth the work?

BLOW OFF VALVE:
have the stock one located down low - race valve needed? best location for BOV?

thanks

Good question I've been wondering myself about the twins. I really don't want to fab up the front end of my car to install a front mount..

Procharger has a front mount kit coming out for the ls1 next month. It probably wont need much work to make it work with yours.

They've been talking about the release for months now so i'm hoping so! I'm in the market for one and if i go new vs a used kit, i'd like it to be done only once!

You will be better off with an FMIC. I was running from 10.6 to 10.8 with the twins. I recently switched to a FMIC and dropped down to a 10.29 and gained 2-3 mph. The stock twins would always be very warm to the touch after making a 1/4 mile pass or driving around.

What kind of a difference would the OP see if he switched to the twin 4.5" IC's? Can he reuse his piping with them or do they require a larger pipe? Just seeing if that's an option to not have to refab anything. I'm new to FI and am reading reading reading right now so forgive me if my question has an obvious to some answer.

Usually you have to use different piping for a FMIC. I am sure a few of the old pipes could be used but that would depend on what kind of intercooler was used and what piping components came with it. I have heard that the 4.5" IC's are better and more efficient. However, I had the smaller 3.5" IC's with my kit.

I did not know larger twins are out there - fit in same location?Purchase from what supplier - Procharger?
Any ideas about my fan creating airflow question?

I'll look into the FMIC when it's out after some guys do the trail installs for real feedback. First production of anything aftermarket needs revision changes

hope this ends up a good Q+A for newbie Procharger guys to share!

I'm starting with the twin IC's that came with the kit and adding a meth system. I haven't seen a solution I love for our cars regarding a FMIC. In the meantime, I will see how the car runs and go from there.

The 4.5" intercoolers were an option from ATI with the later D1SC kits from like 2007 and on.

I found them - but at $700 per side - I'll stick with mine or wait for a well designed FMIC kit.

I can't fab anything so really need a good kit to exsist.

I see my car has the old stock aluminum BOV - haven't seen any hint I 'need' a race valve, so will upgrade to the latest Proflo valve.

Starting to think the 3.5" twin kit with my car will probably be just fine - compared to the cost/labor of changing it. Don't think I'll hurt anything, just maybe room for improvement as Packy pointed out.

Somewhere in the forum I seen a front mount the lays down. You have to cut your bumper cover tho to expose more area to let air through it. Aster has already done something like this. I did see a kit somewhere on here tho. Helps if I had the link I know.

Hey chief, do you have your bypass valve going back into the inlet of your procharger?

yes, as set up by Procharger in the kit.

I seem to be on the edge of ok with the 'good' Proflo valve and upgrading to a bigger race valve.

I run the procharger 3.5"twin intercoolers on my 5.3 with a TC78 with 18lbs of boost and they work good, made 686rwhp through the auto and ran the times in my sig.

Try venting your surge valve back into the outside air instead of back into the inlet of the procharger. Just buy one of those lil breather vent filters to put over the valve to keep lil mice out of it. Might help lower you intake temps. The procharger gets warm as you run it and the valve just puts that hot air back into the intake stream helping to make more heat.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

To the OP: The larger LS1 4.5" intercoolers are not a direct swap for the smaller 3.5" LT1 intercoolers, as we looked into it on our '95 Formula. Remember, I said LS1 to LT1. The inlets and outlets are in different locations on the LT1 compared to the LS1.

You would probably drop forty degrees in your inlet air temps if you added 100% methanol injection to your engine. The methanol is only injected under heavy throttle conditions, most people don't go through much methanol.

At 12 psi with your 383 you should be just fine with the stock bypass valve, but if you have had any problems keeping the intercooler hoses from popping off, or if you plan on running more boost, then I would upgrade to the Race Valve.

Great idea! Bob

Good stuff, thanks to all that replied!

Bob - per our conversation, I'll likely add my extra Proflo valve to the original one in series and make them both vent to atmosphere.

As for the twins - I'll read their temps after driving with a laser temp deal - see exactly how warm they get.

That sounds like a good plan. Bob
