Everyone is sarcastic, because there are several of these post a month. Usually from newbies. If you do a search, there are numerous threads about budget builds coming close to or meeting your goals.

Im pretty much in the same boat as you, with the same goals in mind. I think its funny when people say you should budget atleast $20,000 for a decent turbo build. Which could be true if you don't have any supporting mods like a good rear end, trans, etc.. And you buy everything brand knew, and have a shop build and install everything. I am planning on doing a 408 LQ4/LQ9 with a 91mm+ turbo, Vic. Jr intake, AFR or TFS heads. If your not in a rush you can find the parts cheap if you keep your eyes peeled. In my case I got the truck manifolds for free, and I am going to try to find a really high mileage 6.0L. Having a good friend that is an engine builder also helps the budget. I plan on bulding the whole kit myself to keep costs down as well.

I would agree...But not a lot of pre-built cars in my neck of the woods...Fairbanks Alaska...
Besides I already have a ride...91 notchback stang...
This is not my first rodeo...(it will be my fist turbo build though)
I have my own ideas on what I want to build but thought it would be interesting to see what others would build with a clean slate and a real persons budget...
(I see a lot of people building something because they already have it, block, heads ect. and build around that)
I have always been more a function over form type of person and would rather have something that is cheaper and works than something that is the latest bling along with the price tag that goes with it.
Cheapest does not have to mean cheap...Just looking for what is the best bang for the buck...Like 6.0 block instead of LSX...stock 6.0 crank vs stroker crank...etc.
(AES forged 370 for around $3,000 and a forcedinductions GT-88 with t6 flange for around $1200. Tfs 220 as cast heads around $1400-1700. LS6 intake or vic jr with a 23x duration cam on a 115 or 116 lsa on a 110 or 111 icl. That would be a good start)
(370 lq9, tfs 225, fm pt88, custom cam)
These post are what I was hoping to see...
I always like to see how others would build something as I almost always learn something new...The old "more than one way to skin a cat" routine...
Thanks for everybodys input...
Anybody else have a favorite build to reach this goal...?

cost really comes down to how much of the work you can do yourself.
i think all it takes is a 370, some good heads like afr 225s or tfs head, good intake, a good turbo cam, and an 80mm+ turbo.

That combo or one close to it is pretty much what I've been figuring on building...
What kind of boost with the above 370 combo would it take to get the 900-1000rwhp I am looking for...
18-22# or so...?

What about a set of DrJ's L-92 heads...? They are supposed to have .520 thick decks...
And yes I know a lot of people don't like "import" parts...but "if" they work and hold up I have no problem using them...
Case in point I have put the hurt to some "import" rods on a blown alcohol motor running 25+# boost with no complants from the rods...

I'm about 30 to 33k in the hole now. Could have been done a bit cheaper. However I expect to reach this goal next month.
370 lq9, tfs 225, fm pt88, custom cam. Th400, steel shaft, 12 bolt, full spohn suspension, hp tuners, eboost 2, wideband, 2 step.
If I were to do it over I wouldn't have started lol. I'm gonna have more in this then my Viper.

OP I'm not a turbo guy myself, so I'm gonna go ahead and say the AES 390 ci, AFRs, Brute Speed Blower Cam, F-1A Procharger (cheaper than turbo for sure and can definitely get you to 900), Midwest Chassis 9" (not the cheapest option but basically the best), full fuel system, methanol injection, etc. No doubt a ton of money but its cheaper than a lot of turbo systems making that power (though the cost of the MWC 9" does bring up the total a bit)

Take a look at this build that we did back at the old shop that is not open any longer. We started with a new LS2 block, and used good parts but nothing trick to it. Bob

Search that, you'll see a bunch of threads on this. Most people are just gonna tell you its gonna cost $25,000-$30,000 and that usually ends the discussion because of sticker shock.
Best bet IMO opinion is to go with a kit from Josh @ KYTP. 91mm turbo. 408ci. LSX iron block, 6 bolt heads, 4L80E tranny, Strange 12 bolt rear-end. Its all the miscellaneous **** that adds up......
