IMO it depends on what is cheap to you. 20K may be nothing to one person but may take years to save for another. I agree with the rest your gonna have to dish out some money to make it right so things don't break on you. I would start out buying a rear, suspension, tranny before even looking at the motor. These would most likely give out first anyways.

I think he worded it wrong.... I think he meant least expensive way.... But search thru the stickies, its there....
Hitting that goal and maintaining that goal is different budgets.... But if its going in a fox and properly setup and u can do all the labor and arent scared of brand used it can be done... But even then theres engine management (fast,bs3,etc) and ams 1ooo which totally throws out the budget aspect.... Good luck fellow budget builder

Big & dumb is almost always cheaper. At the power level stated, a roots blown BBC with all used parts is far cheaper than building it with an LS based engine.
Even at a lower level, say 700 rwhp, the BBC is still cheaper, mostly due to the wide selection of decent quality used parts, in particular the 4.500+ bore blocks that fit a 4.500+ stroke crank without much clearance work.
I bought a 14-71 BDS pro mod blower for $1100, spent $150 modifiying it to accept three carbs ($100 each), put it on a used $100 tall deck blower intake. China rods & crank, TRW pistons, used Crower roller cam, used rocker arms... Total engine cost well under $10K, including ignition. 702 rwhp with 4L80E & 9" using 87 octane 18% underdrive on the blower @ 8-9psi
I am not saying a blown BBC is better, just cheaper. My wife's LS2 GTO with a TVS2300 is a much better car to drive, but it was much more expensive, and makes less power.

Find a junk yard 6.0
Bore it to a 370, callies rods, diamond/wiseco pistons, and reuse the stock crank, main and head studs, port the 317 heads and put some good valves and springs in them, go with a Z06 cam or a turbo cam of choice, buy an LS6 IM and TB and have those ported aswell. Single or twin turbo?

Ok...The new word for the day is FRUGAL...![Bang Head](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_banghead.gif)
As for a BBC...Making that kind of power is stupid easy...Been there done that...more than once...N20, Blown alcohol etc.
To clear up the air a bit...Car is set up for that kind of power (may need convertor and gear change for a turbo)
I am mostly looking to build and learn something new...Never built a LS biased engine or played with turbo's or tuned with electronic fuel inj...
These are all things I am interested in learning and playing with.
So...Back to the build at hand...
Needs to be LS biased, turbocharged and F.I....( I know I could build it a lot more "frugal" as a blow through carb...but I've already played with that...)
I have no problem using used parts or "import" parts as long as they get the job done and are not "crap"...
I will build the engine, hot and cold sides etc. The only thing I can't do is the machine work.
And yes I know that there are other posts with builds on them and and I will work my way through them (it just takes a lot of time because of how slow my net is...
)
Mostly I was trying to tap into the knowledge base that is here and not try and reinvent the wheel...

Take a look at this build that we did back at the old shop that is not open any longer. We started with a new LS2 block, and used good parts but nothing trick to it. Bob

I was more interested in his engine build...
I'm not planing on a supercharger this time (done that back in the day with a Paxton) This will be a turbo engine this go around...

Gotta love the "grenade" sbc...
Have not posted there for awhile, since I can't seem to remember my password and I'm to lazy to setup a new user name...

op, i've seen a few high power budget builds, but the cost of an actual built block is about 1/3rd the cost. supporting mods cost alot, especially at that power level.

So funny you mention the grenade, I know Marty as he is local to me. That guy is nuts man, he turbo'd a 500 inch caddy, his daily driver is a v6 camaro he slapped an ebay turbo on with nitrous on. Runs low 12s with an s10 converter in it haha. He did a huge wheel stand this year in his low 9 second twin to4e turbo 3rd gen. Ended up bending the frame so he hooked it up to a post and winched it back into shape hah. That guy is legend around here!! He's been in a few hot rods and car craft mags also. Sorry to get off topic.
