Exclamation Is this true about e85 or just bs

So yesterday I was talking to my dad about running e 85 in my car and maybe some of his. Well later on in the day he went down to the local speed shop to pick up some parts and was asking them their thoughts on e 85 and they were telling him that the octane level is inconsistent with 104 octane meaning that 1 station might 104 and the other 1 might be 95 octane and told him that a lot of the guys around there are blowing up there motors on it. I'm not sure if this is a way to scare him so he will keep buying race fuel or what. I would like to see you guys opinions and thoughts expescially the guys here running e85

The blend does change depending on the time of year. If you tune on the summer blend which is more Ethanol and less gasoline you could hurt some parts if you ran it hard on the winter blend that is less Ethanol and more gasoline (lower octane.) The trick would be to keep the tune conservative enough to run on the lower octane blend OR buy a test kit and test it every time you pump.

Or run a wide band... It is true the blend changes all the time. My station I get it from has e70 but they advertise e85. So it depends on where your getting it.

LOL, what a crock of BS. Ethanols anti-knock properties are pretty much exactly the same from E50-E90. The only thing you will notice from any change in blend is the AFR reading .1-.15 higher or lower. It has no effect on driveability or ability to make power. There is absolutely nothing to worry about, keep the tune off the ragged edge and never think about it again

In Illinois, E-85 varies during the year and I've never had problems with 2 different motors. My original 346 still ran great the day I took it out. The pistons were fine and just for the hell of it, me and my tuner took it out the last day it ran and cranked the timing to it to see if it would detonate. I think we got to 48 deg. at WOT and while it lost power, it NEVER detonated. The compression was 11.5:1. I had about 25K on E-85 and 92K total on it. Now, I'm running a LS2-403 with 9.8 compression, planning on boost in the future. The stock cooling system works fine. Maybe you could blow up a motor on it but its much more forgiving then gas. If you tune for E-85 and you get the winter blend, it'll be running richer, BTW.

Another internet myth is that you can't store e85 in barrels for more than a few weeks because it's octane levels will decrease somehow

BS, I have a friend who is a shop owner and keeps e85 in a 50 gallon drum. He has at times gone weeks without opening the barrel, and fills the tank afterwards, and has no issues with his tune or motor.

The only problem I can see with it is that it will attract water and does wreak havoc on rubber. Even the 10% stuff is destroying my lawn equipment. Carb rebuilds are cheap at least

There are many additive to take care of that if you have a big concern.

made several back to back 1000+ rwhp pulls on winter late Jan winter blend e85 79% tested. I haven't seen anything inconsistent with the way my car runs between winter-summer e85 or other stations I have bought from. Down in houston at tx2k11 guys were testing it at a station down there and it was 91%. I ran some in my car but couldn't tell any difference in the way it ran either.

Here is an E85 regional chart that shows when the different blends are used.
