Default Real Boost and Horsepower Limit of a Stock GM LS Engine

This is an interesting read about a stock LS and how it holds-up under big boost:

Awesome!! I feel so much better about my LY5 short block purchase now ($125). Albeit, I'll be throwing in some forged rods and pistons, it's still comforting to know that the stock foundation is pretty solid right out of the box.

The motor didn't seem to suffer much of what I've been reading on these boards eg. heads lifting, crank flexing, caps walking, etc. -or- maybe they just didn't report these issues?? I don't know..

In the mean time and in between time, I more than anxious to start working on my new "boost junkie" motor.

That engine is not stock and they used 118 octane fuel. People are going to start thinking the stock engine in their car with just pump gas can take that much abuse

It's not completely stock but there are members on here making big power with stock engines. A good tune, well seasoned short block with LS9 head gaskets, and studs will take you a long ways. Too many factors to put a number a reliable # on. One guy might make 1000HP in a light well tuned car and last years, and another in a heavy car or truck with one little mistake could let go at 600...

That's a good point, but on the other hand, I think it's cool to show the limits of the stock components that come in these motors. If they only used 93oct fuel, they would merely show the limit to the fuel. Stepping up to 118oct accomplishes what I think they were trying to get across.

Carry on...

show up at the stock short block nationals in april and find out in person

my 5.3 made 749rwhp with only 799 casting heads, ls6 cam, head studs, rod blots and edlebrock intake and turbo that is huge

going to add nitrous over the winter to get the huge turbo to spool, have not had any luck with the car at the track 10.31 at 147
