Default Guys running LS7/9 head gaskets...

Typically when you run an MLS gasket, you are supposed to have the heads and block surfaced to a RA of 50 or better. Are you guys doing this or just running them with nothing done?

I know skinnies runs a stock 5.3 block with LS7 gaskets, but I'm wondering if he just slapped some LS7 gaskets in there and called it good, or if he had machining done.

I pulled some graphite gaskets off of my LQ4, so naturally I am curious as to what most of you are getting away with.

I'd say 95% of people replace studs/gaskets on their junkyard setups and go. The machine work would cost more than the motor.

Cool... I went back and researched and found out the LS7 gaskets are only 3 layer. I thought those were the ones that were 7 layer. Then upon my research, I found it is the LS9 gasket that is 7 layer.

Thanks guys.

Depends on what your doing. We run reguler GM gaskets on all our FI builds with no issue's. I see the only reason for LS9 gaskets is to lower compression but would be worried about the quench more.

Define "regular GM gaskets"... The one's I pulled off of my LQ4 were your typical graphite style with the steel combustion ring. That's what I use on my 3.0 liter, but my 3.0 block is O-ringed, so it just clamps that steel ring right in place.

A lot of guys are running LS9 gaskets.I think the extra boost would out weigh any loss from the quench worries.I was also told they were made to handle more torque.

I was under the impression that the LS9 gaskets were the same thickness as "normal" GM MLS gaskets. They are stated on SummitRacing's website and other places to have a thickness of 0.051" thickness, which is what I thought others to be, too.

Yes all gm ls style mls head gaskets are .051... they even state that in g.m. training classes.

Now for the comment of running a ls7 gasket on a 5.3...... ok the ls7 is 4.125 bore and a 5.3 is what? Its under a 3.908 ls1 bore I know for sure soo how well would a head gasket with over a quarter inch bigger work?

As for ls9 head gaskets, I do truely believe that a ls9 gasket vs. A 6.0 mls would hold more power on a boosted app. Mainly because gm made that gasket just for a boosted app,it even says "supercharged" on the gasket. I've heard myths that someguys have hit over 900whp and not pushed water with 317 heads an zr1 gaskets.

MLS gaskets are forgiving of the surface. Cometics are not.

GM MLS gaskets are designed so that the outer 2 layers form the flat sealing surface for the inner active layers. All Gen4 have 2 active layers except the LSA/LS9, which have 4, so you get twice the sealing power

Smooth is good when dealing with MLS gaskets. You can hand lap the surfaces if they are true to start with. Most machine shops never get them as smooth as you can by hand lapping.

I would not think twice about using the Ls9 gaskets -use them. The cometic gaskets need the block and head surfaces machined so they are near perfect. Mind you I always machine both surfaces when I can for the Ls9s.

I have wondered about the surface condition with MLS gaskets. It was recommended I spray copper gaskets with Gasket Dressing Sealant on another motor build. Would this be added safety?

I've been running the LS9s on an unprepped junkyard motor with good results.

Quite question, when I switch from my stock 5.3 gaskets to ls9 gaskets, are they going to be the same thickness when compressed? I'm wondering if I need to fa tor that in when I buy pushrods

By everything I've read (not on public forums), they are the same thickness as other GM MLS gaskets at 0.051" compressed thickness.
