Reason for the thicker oil is due to the heat from the Turbo.the oil thins out because its keeping the Turbo cooler and lubricated. I my self am going to start with vr1 10-40 if they make it or 20w50 otherwise

I've heard good things about VR1 oil but I would like to use a fully synthetic oil since I have a new motor. Anyone here use a good 10w40 synthetic oil that they would recommend? Was thinking about Amsoil

It sounds as though the builders are thinking in terms of sbc.I dont wanna argue whats wrong or right here since build tolerences can be a varible.Take this with grain of salt cause, building cars up is jus a hobby for me.
So people run thick oil for heat protection or to aid in sustaining pressure at Wot.Is drainback or the pickup tube considerd to be sufficent in most cases or even considered at all?I would think if you run thick oil then a larger diameter pickup tube would need to be entertained."Think about eating icecream through a straw as opposed to the traditional shake".This would become compounded upon first start up or after a oil change since the pickup tube would take more time to be siphoned full.I believe this condition has a much smaller window of error then most think.I have seen my 98 Z drop pressure on a hard launch too many times btw.my oil has never been more then a 1/2 quart low.I also notice after a oil change pressure is slower in recovery then a sbc upon initial start up this is ecspecially true when I forget to prime with the starter.I realize the 98-99 block was modified to better support the pump by way of drainbacks in the webbing.Thing is there are too many varibles to debate responsibilty but,if you think about the differences between ls1's and sbc.By that I mean bearing speeds being higher for the ls1 along with tight tolerences leave oil starvation a factor most take for granted.I think people should consider staying within manufactures recommend oil weight given bearing tolerences stay within factory spec.
On the whole heat protection thing from what I know if all oils were tested to survive maximum heat before breakdown.People would find the temp difference to be less of a factor and more a false security. If you want to protect from heat then invest in the cooling system.I consider this a area returning 2 fold with the obvious added engine protection on top of being allowed more aggressive tuning advantages.
