Check out the 5.3 I just bought for $100!
I am in the process of doing my 5.3 budget turbo build. I bought this engine from a guy on craigslist for $100. He told me it had a slight knock so he pulled it out for a 6.0. Slight knock my ***! There goes my budget right out of the window!
Crazy thing is the motor turned over nice and free when I bought it. The cylinder wall only has few small nicks in it at the very bottom. It may be usable. I am going to take it over to the machine shop and see what they say. Anyone got a extra rod and piston laying around!

I don't see the losing end of the deal here. For about another 250 you can have a motor that has been re-freshed and ready to take some abuse. To top it off at least you know whats in there.

cause thats almost $350..for that or a little more why not just buy a good clean running motor?

i bought a 100 dollar motor that was said to "run just fine" got it home and pulled the heads and the cylinder walls were rusted, nothing wrong anywhere else, 4.8. guy left the spark plugs out it for who knows how long.
Tore it apart, the bearings looks amazing, the crank was great, rods and pistons, perfect, needed machined, and re ringed, wouldve been perfect, i opted to just buy a lkq 5.3 at that point. LM4 aluminum motor, so when the it goes itll get sleeved
now im sitting here with a block and 4.8 rotating assembly with no use for them, lol

everywhere I have looked around me, people are asking anywhere from $700-$1000 for 5.3's and 4.8's. When I saw this for sale I jumped on it. I figure I could tear a motor down and see what was causing a small "knock" for $100. If it was just lifters or something small like that, then I would be ahead of the game. I may end up seeing what it will cost to clean the cylinder up and replace the rod and piston. I think it would be fun to see how far I could get with it.

a VERY heavy coffee table.
I wonder if you could chop the top off a dished piston, smooth the bottom and glue some cork to it and use it as a coaster. chances are you wont be using the pistons in this one either way. If the block needs machining that is..
