Bought my 4.8 with 39k on it. Pulled the bolts out for studs, didn't even pull the head off. Installed a cam and dropped it in. First day it saw 17psi, and it has recently seen 22psi. Been going strong for 2 months now.

Btw, this engine costed me all of $400

I believe your talking about the 58x reluctor? where you need to buy the conversion box from Lingenfelter. I research this a little and couldnt find a direct answer. I just read that if the crank sensor is black it is for a 24x and if it is gray it is a 58x reluctor wheel.

I paid $650.00 for a 32,000 mile 2004 5.3 , recently it has developed a cold knock. Maybe a wrist pin., piston slap, or main bearing issues. After a few seconds it totally goes away and runs perfectly. Nothing is guaranteed with these engines.

The after market parts manufacturers have got to hate threads like this. It seems the less you give a damn, the better off things work out. LOL

I paid $1000 for my LQ4 with 104k on it. Not as good as some of the other deals I have seen on here obviously, but it's all I had to work with locally. I too pulled the bottom end to check things out, and all the bearings looked great. Should have left it alone, but threw new bearings in (checked for tolerance) and put it back together with new lifters, pushrods, cam, springs, etc. Hopefully it's as reliable as some of these others.

So for a high boost junkyard drag engine that will have 0 street time, is the 5.3 any better than the 4.8? (GENIII)

LKQ has a 5.3 with 110k for $580 or a 4.8 with 60k for $450 locally.

bought an '05 5.3 with 38K miles complete with wiring harness and all accessories for $500. Hookup thru a friend and one time deal.

Have some LS9 gaskets, ARP head studs, 225/223 114LSA cam ready to go inside on the shelf Figuring out injector and turbo sizing now for e85.

IMO get the motor with the better LS2 style rods. ie 05+ setups.
