Exclamation Iron Heads on the QMP Turbo Formula

Got the car running tonight with the new 6.0 iron heads. These heads have no port work whatsoever. We did have Brian Tooley at TEA do his other magic to them....put new 2.02/1.60 valves, guides, Comp 987 springs, and O-ringed them for use with the stock graphite GM gaskets (thanks Brian!). They're 73cc chambers, so the compression is now down around 8.25:1.

We decided to have them go ahead and flow the heads while I was there. To everyone's amazement, they actually flowed really well! Flow numbers at .550 lift and .600 lift were basically the same though, showing that the heads could simply move no more air. Intake was 260cfm and Exhaust was 230cfm. We've seen some ported LS1 heads that didn't flow that much on the exhaust!

Anyway, took the car out tonight for some "street tuning". It pulls HARD. Boost was at 24lbs (yep...TWENTY-FOUR ). I ran it through all 4 gears, countless times, back to back . Probably made at least 10 WOT runs. Temp never got over 180 degrees, and not one drop of water from the overflow.

Tomorrow we'll get it on the dyno and start re-tuning it. We changed back to the .96 AR exhaust housing (from the 1.30 AR) since the heads lowered the compression. So now it's pretty rich....10.2-10.6:1 A/F during most of the runs tonight.

Also tested out the Harlan 2 Step box. It's badass! Simple install, and works great (Thanks Harlan!). We just tested it in the garage to see how it was going to work....floored it in neutral with the rev limiter set on 4500rpm's, and almost instantly we got 7.5lbs of boost!!! Soooo cool.

Can't wait until Saturday....

sounds awesome Rob! Testing out iron vs. aluminum heads for high boost should yield good info. Keep up the good work

24 pounds! You're cool. Now don't show us 750rwhp dyno sheets and 130mph timeslips...

Nice work Rob!!! I think your detonation issues ( with iron heads) will be almost nil if you can keep the coolant temps down like you are. You could single handedly transform the iron head market

Tell Brian to get a few sets ready, and he may want to port them! I have a feeling others will be trying this soon.

So the iron heads don't lift like alum at high boost or with big nitrous hits.Good info Rob,if it proves to work I see a bunch of people using them. Can't the iron heads be CNC'ed just like alum.I know it's a harder material to deal with than alum but it can be done right.I guess 24 psi will make up for the head flow numbers.

Hey Rob, dont take this the wrong way but your an *** hole!!!!
You pissed me off got me thinking about using my 2-step and drulling all over myself then finish by saying race on sat and all i can think is how bad i want to race and try out my new set up and my 2-step(Tanks Harlan!!!) But we just got 5 F^%K!@G inches of RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! only thing i'll race is my dam boat!!!!!!!! the 3rd was opening day for my track and now it is flooded!!!! you suck.. Im just busten them, like i said dont take it wrong, im jelios you get to race and im water logged!
I have used my 2-step in my driveway to try it out. man it scares the **** out of the people next door when they go out side and see my car lifting the front wheels on a 4800 rpm 2-step clutch dump in my driveway. Hard braking after that but its funny listining to them screaming" STOP RACING IN THE DRIVEWAY" hehe
Congrats to hope they stay down and 24psi, holy macril!

Iron heads on an aluminum block seems like such a strange idea.

Hope it works out well though.

And I think he's only seeing so much more boost because the heads are more restrictive

I'll be out of town this weekend or else I'd head to Edgewater to watch your first 9 sec pass in the forumula (that is where you're racing correct?).

Alright, why is it I can only see 2, maybe 2.5psi boost with the 2 step?? Does it matter how much boost you're setup to run, I wouldn't think so??

OK . . . so if I understand this right, the iron heads don't lift like the LS1 heads?? Wow, this could change a few things . . .

Reckless....exactly. That's our next step.

Regarding the heads not lifting...we don't know for sure yet. I don't think we'll know until we've put some miles on this combination. And even then, we still won't know at what point they will be an issue, since we are out of turbo right now. The best I think we will be able to see is about 825-850rwhp on the dyno before the turbo is completely done.

Should know tonight....

p.s. We aren't running at Edgewater, we're running at Beech Bend in Bowling Green Ky Saturday.
