Also, how far do these small studs tighten into the block? This is my first go at putting studs in an LS. The larger studs all went in fine, torqued to 75 ft-lb with no issues. The couple of small ones that I did manage to get in by hand, I ran them down until they stopped and now only about the 75% of the threads in the nut are actually holding onto the stud, since it went down so far into the block.
Ya that's common they actually sell a thread chaser or if you want take an old bolt and just run it through the holes a few times that can clean them right out enough to hand tighten

Sounds like you might have to use the orig bolts for the little ones. I didn't have any issues on my L33, but either your block is drilled deeper or your studs are slightly shorter.

I don't want to reuse to the stock TTY bolts. I'm kind of at a loss since I can't use the shorter studs. The nut isn't fully threaded on. I'll hand tighten the rest of them and see if that's the case with all of them.

The studs are the correct length. My block seems to be drilled much deeper than normal.

That's probably the issue. Sucks to hear, planning on longer bolts?

For anyone on the fence about using these Ebay studs, Thompson Motorsports now makes their own studs with specs similar to the ARP studs. Just ordered a set and gonna give them a try. They are priced fairly well too.

Tithe little ones along the top of the head aren't TTY. Just normal bolts torqued to 22 ft lbs..

Has alper or procomp fixed the stud machining issues? I'm debating these or maybe the newer ones from Thompson Motorsports. More expensive than the Pro Comp's but a bit cheaper than ARP.

I don't think they have them up on their website yet. Here is a link to their Facebook post about them:

Just installed my alper head studs. No issues really besides 2 of the big studs were a little tight on the allen head. Just used a metric instead of standard or vise versa.....don't remember exactly but it fit like a glove and all the studs survived torquing to 75ft/bs with arp lube.

I ordered mine a few months back when everyone seemed to have issues.

They emailed me at first and said their first batch turned out with bad threads so had to wait an extra week for a fresh batch.

We all try to save money on builds but in the end you want security that a $200 part doesn' t destroy a 6K investment

In my experience i'm up to 1 use of arp studs with one breaking off in the block. i have used ebay studs in 5 motors now without one break. Maybe a fluke with the arp but i def am not happy about it.

I've reused my arp studs 3 times on my diesel builds. 50+ PSI on each motor without fail. Maybe some of you guys got some fluke parts but there is no way I would ever chance holding the head down with cheap Chinese ebay studs. But that's just my opinion.

Still sorting out issues with my setup. Still Slow, but I did run 25lbs on the china studs and pushed no water... 10:1 5.3 LS9 head gaskets. Done a few compression tests before and after trying to sort out other issues and all cyls appear to be sealing great for now.

I have used the ebay studs for several builds never had a problem, they look just like the ARP..which are very nice and very expensive. I have used ARP bolts for years never had an issue, yes they are more money, reason I tried the ebay studs $69 verses $500 for a ls.motor.made several 148 mph passes with ebay studs..! anything can fail!!
my money goes further on a budget..luck ,trial and error..

6k shortblock = good studs, $200-800 shortblock = china head studs. I've never had an issue with the pro-comp's, 75 ftlbs, arp lube and a known good torque wrench. Throw the little studs in the trash and reuse the 8mm bolts.
