Default Stock Rockers or Trunion Upgrade?

My engine is almost complete forged rods, pistons, stock crank, Texas Speed .650 dual valve springs, Custom Tick Cam .598/610 lift cam. I think I will be fine to just clean up a used set of rockers with brake cleaner and soak in oil. I am contemplating the trunion upgrade but from searching it seems many have had issues with the trunion not moving as freely after install. Dont feel like spending $400 on new rockers. I would think with the relatively low lift of my cam and .650 valve springs and 150lbs of seat pressure I should be fine with a used set of stock rockers but want some other opinions.

I have had a trunion break on stock rocker before but I think when my springs were swapped they didnt set them up properly. Because of that I am stuck on what to do because I would think a trunion up grade can still break.

Yeah, I just had heard that several people saying once they were installed they did not move as freely. That worried me. I guess I havent heard of anyone having it break after the upgrade.

i have never had a single problem with stock rockers, 400-800+hp
or stock pushrods for that matter.

7000 rpm rev limiter burnouts
20lbs of boost

all day long lol

What trunion upgrade was that tho?

Only reason I did was because I plan to shift 7400-7700 but if your staying under 7000 then I think stock is fine!

It was Comp. I wasnt sure if rpm shift point or valve spring pressure or lift was the determining factor. I wont shift above 7k for sure.

Do it! Do it! Do it! to me it is cheap insurance! i would do the trunion upgrade over aftermarket rockers... seems everyone is always having issues with aftermarket rockers and they are super expensive!

if you dont have rockers yet brian tooley sells the factory rockers with the upgrade already for 270 IIRC.

This. The deciding factor was that the stock rockers with trunion upgrade are rock solid while it seems the aftermarket ones have their issues. Same way I view the coil packs. Why mess with something that works great and is such a minimal cost.

You mean trunion downgrade? I've never had an issue with stock rockers at all. Think about how much a quality bearing of that size cost and multiply that by 16. No way that is a quality bearing in the comp kit.

Default Trunion bearings

How good are they in there? Can I use c clamp or will I need to rent wheel bearing tool and use impact?

Feel like I've heard way more stories of the aftermarket bearing failing or having issues then the factory needle bearing.
I've considered epoxying in some screens over the drain back holes in case of failure but they just don't seem to fail without some other interference issue.

The stock ones have failed, I have fished out the needles from the oil pan with a mag. How rare is it I dont know, prob a pretty low failure rate though. I have only used the Summit trunnion upgrade, the stock bolts are tight in them, had to burnish the bolts to get them loose, so they wouldnt affect the torque. The new build is getting stock ones, since I prob have 50 to choose from, lol.

Yea I know this is a 2013 thread... but it was a good one!

We use to epoxy screen over drain back holes on the turbo Buicks for this reason. I'm thinking a well placed small neo magnet could be used as well. FWIW I've run a ton of different used factory rockers and never had a failure. but I've seen pictures and heard the horror stories as well.

I've heard if you run 400lbs or more on the open spring rating, its best to run the bushing style.

I've had low mileage rocker arms fail.... but they were not stock cam/springs.... I would get the BTR ones as the Summit stuff is most likely made in China. It is an easy upgrade with a basic press and takes about 5 minutes per rocker arm once you get the hang of it.

Been following this a bit. About to pull the trigger on a CHE setup. I’m not gonna be using dual springs with my cam but, needle bearings scattered in my engine kinda scares me. Figure $200 bucks is cheap insurance.
