My close friend has a 408 ls engine with a 4.0 whipple. He makes 23lbs of boost pump gas 91 with meth injection and can daily drive it. It's in a 86 Chevy truck that weighs 4200lbs n has been 115 in the 1/8 n when the 60ft gets down will run 5s. Still lots left in blower speed, the 4.0 is rated at 2518 cfm which is around 1500hp capable. I plan to start up my custom whipple build this week, I'll make a thread soon

My 2.9 was over a year, the 4.0 is around 6 months old. The intercooler in the 2.9 is not good, but the 4.0 seemed good. The problem with the 4.0 was the fittings, they were undersized so they could not flow enough water to support my goals.

Kurt, when did you purchase your kit? I've only been back to Whipple for about a year(I was gone for a few years) and to my understanding, we have a new guy making out intercooler cores. I wonder if you have an older one. I'll talk to the guys on Monday to find out when we switched.

The 2.9 and the 4.0 use the same core. Only difference is the fitting location. We do drill out the 2.9 core for bigger fittings for the COPO's though. Just the bigger fittings make a huge difference. Maybe you should try that with the 4.0 core. That's what I will be doing

Any motor mount plate recommendation? I would like to keep the trans in the stock location. Yes I am searching too. Just wondering what you know has been used with headers and keeping in stock location

My two cores are not the same, I changed the fittings before running the 4.0 as it failed flow testing for my power goals (1,000hp flywheel). The 2.9 core flows 5 gallons per minute at 10psi as delivered, it picked up to 5.8gpm@10psi after I changed the fittings to -12 (core is restriction). The 4.0 intercooler flowed 9.5gpm@10 psi as delivered, after changing the fittings to -12 it flowed 20gpm@10psi. 20 gpm will support 1,000hp if the core has the ability, that will be part of my dyno testing.

For side motor mounts many people make mounts for your car. I use some purchased from Detroit Speed, but I don't think they make them. They fit the standard 3 bolt mount and you would need frame mounts for the 1st gen SB Camaro for your sub frame.

The fittings I fixed, it's the core that restricts the flow. Can you verify that the newer systems use the same core in the 2.9 and 4.0 as the 4.0 cores water flow is fine once it's modified.

I really hope I don't have a problem keeping the IAT's down. That actually the main reason I'm running a 4.5 over a 2.9 front feed, so I don't work it too hard for the power I want. I will be tapping the core for -10 fittings to help too. What water pump are you using for the intercooler? I need a decent pump because I will be running a 5 gallon cell for ice on race day

I was thinking of having a single pass made for my kit through our guy, but I think I'll keep it simple and run the kit as is because it should be efficient enough

I tapped my intercooler for -12 as the -8 stuff it comes with chokes the flow below 10GPM. I think -10 might have done it, but I need a 90 degree turn pretty quick so I went -12. I have a Meziere pump, it's the only pump I found that can run the GPM I need at the PSI required.

Thanks! It is almost 13 inches tall, but I kept everything else as tight as possible so it would fit in some cars with just a cowl hood. I am under 10 inches from the water pump mounting point to the front of the drive.
