4.5 liter Whipple build
Hey guys, my name is Josh and I'm new to this site. Well actually I'm new to LS's all together. I'm looking for tips and opinions on my build that I'll be starting soon.
Here's what I will be using...
6liter block
Manley rotating assembly
Trick flow 255 ls3 heads
10:1 compression
Pump E85
4.5 liter Whipple sandrail kit with gt500 crusher inlet and the new elypticle throttle body
12 rib belt setup for the supercharger
Headers are to be determined...looking for a 1.875 primary and a 3.5 collector
This engine will be going into my 67 firebird. It will be a daily driven car. But will be more a long the mines of a drag car, but still my means of transportation.
I will be running a 1.76 low powerglide
Converter is still undetermined
9" ford with big axels, spool and currently 3.70's. I may run a 3.42...still not sure what I want to do.
My biggest toss up at the moment is stroke. Because this is a daily driver, I still want decent gas milage. Lol. So I would want to keep the cubes down, but then again the additional torque from a longer stroke might get the car moving easier with the glide and 3.42's. The car should also weigh around 3550 with me in it. Not too light. But I'd also be afraid of 'worse' traction issues with the long stroke. I don't want to run a slick, just a drag radial.
So my goal is to drive the car 100 miles to the track, run in the 9's and drive it home on the same tires and fuel I drive on everyday. And hopefully, get upwards of 20mpg. Haha.
Let me know what you guys think.
Also, my buddy Nate (owner and operator of ALL OUT PERFORMANCE Fresno) will be building the engine and making a good grind for cam. Not too sure what he has planned yet for cam.

Oh the 175 will do it for sure, but it'll also be close to its limit and the IAT's will be much higher. I'm going with the big blower to keep IAT's down and also so it doesn't heat soak as much.

Traction will always be an issue if you really want to run a 4.5 whipple. You will also eat a good bit of power turning a charger that big. I'd think a smaller blower would be necessary to get over 20MPG. Plus you are at a 20-30% disadvantage running E85 for raw MPG numbers.
I'd also think that a billet crank would be a requirement to keep the snout from snapping off with a 4.5L.

He could kill some low end power with timing.

I know it'll take a lot of power to turn this blower but I also won't be spinning it very fast to make the power that I want. So I think it'll work fine.

Hey what's going on man? Been a long time since I've been on cencal. What's new?

Same old same old man, I shut the site down months ago. Lack of participation in anything (including the toy drive) made me pull the trigger. Getting some work done on my car too, just have wiring and other odds and ends to do throughout the car and it'll be on the road.

Finally made my way back to Whipple...the first week I was there, we were dynoing a 4liter ford gt. I was instantly hooked and wanting to get my car going again!

Let's wait before throwing anything "Epic" out there until a big Whipple build actually works. I really hope it does too, I'm being 100% serious. It would be my choice for my TA drag car but the last 4L Whipple build is what made me decide to go a different route.
